From a town full of garage rockers and power pop bands, comes a new sound. Drawing on timeless ideals of songwriting, this new sound will soon sweep the nation with its simplicity and straightforwardness. Danceable beats, sensible melodies, and catchy hooks are the winning formula implemented by the band shoe.
shoe. is a band formed in 2004 in Detroit, Michigan by Dustin Gardner and Chad Kushuba. These individuals have been making music in the Great Lake States for over a decade. Now, as they come together with this new project, they embark on a journey of new and challenging sounds. "New" in the sense that it will always be fresh and exciting, to the listeners as well as the makers even when familiar phrases poke their heads through the musical curtain. "Challenging" because these musicians are constantly trying to make new and exciting tones and sounds into listener friendly songs and dares the audience to come along for the ride.
The band's first adventure was providing the soundtrack for a 2004 stage production at a Detroit Theater, The Abreact. The play was written by a local playwright and entitled "DudeMan". The soundtrack consisted of five two and half minute songs which were played between scenes to set the mood changes of the past scene with the one to come. A very low budget EP was recorded for the production staff and "released" for sale to the patrons of The Abreact.
In April of 2005, the band is self-releasing its debut full length album entitled "pack me with your clothes". It is a genre-defying collection of wonderfully crafted songs which are not only pleasing to the ear but also tend to tell the story of growing up as artists in the competitive arena that is the Detroit music industry. It was produced by shoe. with the help of Mikey Brown and Adam Walker of the Detroit band The Twilight Babies. The album appeals to everyone's general feelings of love and loss and those shadowy questions gnawing away at one's sense of self. Running the gamut of emotions, "pack me with your clothes" takes the listener on a joyride through feelings from holding hands with your first great love to standing in the corner of the gym waiting to be asked to dance at the school dance.
The songwriting duo of Gardner and Kushuba lead the audience through themselves, with Dustin's intriguing melodies and vocal sensibilities carrying through to Chad's inventive riffs. These two songwriters have grown up listening to music like Motown, Pink Floyd, and Radiohead, as well as singing in their school choirs.
Having only two members, shoe. has the luxury of changing its sound as it changes musicians that collaborate with the band. This also lends a unique attitude to their live performances which, also changing as the musicians change, will never be duplicated from tour to tour.
