ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Album Notes
"The musicianship is qualitative. The drumming is very subtle and really works in the background. That makes for a more anonymous drum sound, but it also works well with the sound that the band is creating. Guitars and bass do a good job, as well. Heavy riffing and shredding solos are to be found, as well as calmer melodic parts. Vocalist Jon Krech deserves an honorary mention. His voice really interests me; his vocal performance varies a lot and I enjoy all of his styles - sometimes he is high-pitched and typical for Power Metal, at other times there is more of a rough Thrash approach and sometimes it is dark and lies between spoken and sung. But most of the time his voice is fragile and full of emotion, with a chanting tone to it." - Adam Westlund (The Metal Observer).
"When it comes to individual songs, I recommend The Knights Templar for its chorus and exciting instrumental parts, Old Blood And Guts for its epic approach." - - Adam Westlund (The Metal Observer) - Cryptic Characters was in his personal top 20 of 2009.

"Jon Krech gets his inspiration from books, fantasy, history, religion and his own endless imagination. It’s obvious in Legion and it became a cruel fairytale with a splendid guitarsolo. No forgiveness is a Black Ballad. A beautiful musical song with lyrics like I will always hate you and I will never forgive you. Sounds bittersweet with a hard angle. In Arrogance you will hear a lot of hooks in tempo, far more than in the other songs." - Maurice van der Zalm (Fury Rocks)

"No Forgiveness will be calmer with a gradual rise, the opportunity for Jon to highlight." - Raskal (Métal Intégral)

"The final song on the CD Highway lost is cowritten by bassplayer Mike Lawson. The most easy song, suited for a greater range of people."-Adam (The Metal Observer)

"Cryptic Characters consists of 6 dark/power metal tracks but fullfield with clear progressive traces and some other metal additionals, such as a 80's and 90's hard rock as well." - Branimir Lokner (Blokner Reviews)

"Lyrically, more than a few of these songs are thought provoking and well structured. It’s obvious that care was taken when considering what to sing about and what messages to address. "Arrogance" is probably the best example of this: 'We cannot ensure our survival through misuse of force / It has never worked and it never will / Now we must learn from the past / Before it again repeats and stop embracing ignorance.'" - RUDI HAUPTMANN (Metal Express Radio)

"SILVER CYPHER progresses again with an approach somewhat dark "Highway Lost" and epic "The Knights Templar". Jon Krech shows itself particularly convincing, delivering soli of any beauty and his song to the hot stamp is a pure régal." - Nono666 (heavysound franch)

"Top class musicianship and song-writing make this one a 'must-have'. Further proof that the US is starting to catch up with their Euro Metal counterparts!" - Datis Alaee (Farvahar Records)

"Sounding like a combination of music from Classic Metal, melodic stylization of Thrash and some very strange vocals, you are whisked away to metal-land. I like this band, and I like Cryptic Characters a lot. Silver Cypher has brought forth a pretty good outing." - JD (MetalBite Review)

"Mike Lawson: the young man delivers really first class work. Jon Krech, a bright spot, controls theatrically the song work while simultaneously utilizes a very strong Power-Metal-organ. Fans of ICED EARTH should give this a listen. Favorite songs: Legion & Old Blood and Guts" - Chris Staubach (Powermetal Punkt DE)

"Cryptic Characters: Great dark power metal." - Doug White of Watchmen Studios (Lethargy, Psyopus, Orgone)

"At the end it is an excellent album that delivers us Silver Cypher, group which should deserved to be more known." - Béa (Metalhear-Webzine)

"We are lucky to have a small cadre of talented metal bands in Ohio, among which Silver Cypher is foremost," JR Carter (Lunarium)

"Cryptic Characters: Top Album Of 2009" - Túrin Turambar

"A truly fine disk" (Underground Empire)

"Love Old Blood and Guts by the band Silver Cypher" - romeolimagolf
