G. Devan Smith's journey becan in Christmas in 1977, when his mother gave him a guitar, an electric organ and a drumset. And even though he couldn't play a lick, it was the beginning of sowing seeds to his future career in music.
As a child, Devan would make short songs by using a tape recorder and a boom box to bounce tracks while adding new tracks. Soon he had taught himself to manually loop songs, like Ronnie Laws' Big Stars, using nothing but a turntable, a tape deck and his ears.
In 1996 Devan aquired an Alesis SR-16 drum machine, A yamaha MT50 4 Track Recorder and a Korg DW-8000 and began to make various genre of music, from hip hop to Bass music to the new style (then) Trip Hop after being inspired by Tricky. During this time Devan began to self study on the music business itself.
In 2002, Devan started to move into the Digital Realm using various programs starting from Music Generator for the PSX. Before long, he was dabbling in Music Studio 5 and Bram Bos' Toureg and later Tunafish. In the Fall of 2009, Devan enrolled into the Art Institute of Seattle where he learned vital technical aspects of making music, while still self studying about the business aspect.
In June 2010 Devan released his first single Deadline under the alias of Monti Rock, The Ultimate Bass Technician. Soon after Devan released his first official album, From Light to Dark: A Journey Into Basslands which contained the hits Dark Elektro and Hardcore Bass #5. Along with the surprise hits Bass Circus and Basscapes.
In February 2011, Devan released the single Bass 3 AM. This lead to the release of the EP Koncepts the following May, which contained the hits Sidewindin' and the Black Dragon Remix of DJ Aero D's Select Bass.
May 9, 2012 launched Devan's last EP under the Monti Rock persona with Monti's Theme which contains more experimental and personal works to date.
Then something happened.
The spirits of Jungle, Drum'n'Bass, 8- Bit began to invade on a permanent basis. With the upcoming release of Skattershot Vol.1: In Your FACE! in 2013, Devan has now taken his foundation of Bass Music and infused it with the spirits of Elektronic Music to blast into new frontiers both on the light side...and DARK.
