ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Album Notes
Slavic national music, folk, modern slavic folk arts, experimental, electronic music compilation.

Mysterious slavic soul. Songs of the ancient ground in the modern slavic country. Whether it is possible to combine incompatible concepts? National roots? Balalaikas and computers? Singing of our grandmothers, noise of a wind and a rigid rhythm? Where traditions come to an end and the fashion begins? From experiments female slavic singing, dark ambient, post IDM, techno (?), postindustrial aesthetics, light piano up to pop (?) music.
Images in your head will be born very quickly. Try to have time to remember all. And if it has not turned out, listen still. It is easy.

teamNORMANrecords:

You may not associate Russia with a burgeoning electronic music scene but you'd be wrong. The Dars label have two great compilations of Russian electronic music entitled 'Music Of Deneb.2099' and 'Slavosonic' Both are really cool little snapshots of this underground subculture. You can hear some of the influences here but more apparent is the influence of the environment. Sure, there are warm electronica moments on here but the overall feel is cold and dark and there is a feeling of alienation running through some of the tracks. I'm not familiar with any of the artists on these but I must say they are all accomplished, talented producers. Featuring Eu, Clapan, Hdj Tom, Add, Nole Plastique, Zavoloka, AA1, Indu Mezu, Cellar Door, Lazyfish etc. Well worth checking out I'd say. Long live the underground.

Initiators of your pleasure.

Mombus and Bacillus Orchestra, - the project from Murmansk, driving which force - Sergey Bakanev. A magic mix фолктроники, acoustic tools and electronic music. A product of joint creativity Момбуса and the various Murmansk musicians, participating in the various Russian compilations devoted to experimental and easy music, and also released some solo albums in Russia (Kama, Cheburec) and behind its limits (Laridae, Nishi). The participant of Russian - German festival of electronic music Sonarctica (March 2006, Murmansk) where besides known Russian musicians musicians of label Sonig (Cologne) took part: Frank Dommert, F.X.Randomiz, Tim Elzer, Schlammpeitziger, Ulrike Goeken, C-Schulz, Waltraud Blischke.

Stud feat Netlenka - Alexey Devjanin aka Stud, known still as the founder of project Gultskra Artikler (Thinner, Lampse) and charming singer NetLenka - a voice Moscow Ethnica music project. Album Stud - LSAD is issued on Dars records and is accessible at present too.

Volga - NN Kikkoman.

NN Kikkoman is Nikolay Nebogatova's artistic pseudonym, the participant of project Spies Boys and one of directors NN Records. Volga is a unique project on Moscow music scene. It successfully combines experimental electronics, contemporary dance rhythms and the original Russian folklore. Pagan psychedelia and shamanism, authentic melodies and lyrics of ancient Russia (12th-19th centuries) mixed with urban aesthetics and contemporary video art are the essential components of Volga performances.

Nick Southgate, Wire

« From the moment I first heard the strange sound of Volga, I've been intrigued and fascinated. I cannot decide which is more arresting - the noises made by those electronic engineers, or the voice of Anjela Manukjan. She sings high on some songs, low on others, and soars like an opera soprano on 'Psalm.' It says on the back that these are pagan songs of ancient Russia, but Anjela makes them sound as if she wrote them.»

ILI feat Volyushka - neo-IDM from Chelyabinsk producer Oleg Semenovyh, which album recently has been issued on Dars records, plus bewitching female voice Volyushka, which manner of singing has absorbed ancient traditions of Russian national culture.

Indu Mezu - the project from Novosibirsk (Russia). INDU MEZU as the brand, exists since 1997. Started with sound collages and hometaping. Further - a computer music collages. The first release on a label 20kbps rec in 2004. Two CD of release on own diy label Misfake studio.
Name of a track very capacious and speaking for Slavs - Valenkee (literally Valenoks, traditional winter Russian footwear for cold areas and the name national songs). Experimental folk the madness developing by the end of a track something very very dark

Ethnica music project feat Mox - the project acted at many festivals: Art Rhythmic Depot (Poland), Budapest (Hungary) - Sziget Festival, Performances and Shaman concerts with Gendos, Sainkho Namtchylak, joint concerts with Norwegian singer Kari Rueslatten.

InterMedia News Agency.

“Vocal part of the project deserves special attention. The leader of the band called NetLenka shows us professional technical skills of folk singing. Her voice Vocal part of the project deserves special attention. The leader of the band called NetLenka shows us professional technical skills of folk singing. Her voice is not too strong, but melodious. The singer's voice has clear modulation and together with perfect instrumental performing allows us to appraise this album at its true worth. ”

Elif Linx - the Chelyabinsk musician Sergey Sergeev nowadays living in Moscow. His career began in the beginning 90, from a spelling of own music then in very popular computer programs. At present the project possesses very individual sound combining such styles as ambient, electronic, post-IDM, experimental music. Very much remembered melody mixed with samples and sound effects.

Nightech - Edward Sherbakov from Serov (Russia), the veteran of movement free the Internet of labels very known both outside Russia (Tonatom), and on a local stage on releases on Other Culture, Cheburec (Out To City), Dars records. Very thin dark ambient in which field records of national tools are used.

Cellardoor, (Daniel Raykhert and Stephan Kubrak, based in Chelyabinsk, Russia) one of the most perspective Ural’s bands, for last year had time release an album on Urbanspraulrecords to participate in compilations Electrosound, Plex, are one of founders Citrus Network Radio. Dreamy, quiet, omnipresent and quite fearing melody is contrasting with violent and complex a rhythm

Lazyfish, - Alexander Potekhin, after debut album Vortex on Moscow Art-tek, at once brought popularity to the musician in Russia and world, there were releases on various known labels Kanzleramt, Trapez, K2 O records. Is very known as sound designer, due to the development for, becoming already cult, musical program Reaktor environment from German manufacturer Native Instruments.

Zavoloka - the Ukrainian project Katya Zavoloka, issued on label Nexsound, the based Andrey Kiritchenko. One of the greatest musical projects from Ukraine. Last album - joint with German producer AGF. The track submitted on compilation, combines slavic female singing and an experimental musical basis.

Denis Korsunsky aka Clapan, - which tracks are an ornament of all compilations on Dars records, have come later in an album « Lullaby of 21 centuries », in post-IDM a key, let released American label Somia. For today stylistics of project Clapan - intelligent a techno and electro, and it is not an obstacle for the edition of the given material on Dars records which frameworks are not limited to styles and directions. Denis - the teacher in multimedia to school of Krasnodar (synthesis of a sound, algorithms, Reaktor, etc.) both widely going on tour musician and the DJ in Russia and world.

Koordinate of wonders - the project from Belarus, released an album on a label " Please Do Something ", and very much remembered under the compilation “ Everything is green ” (Toytronic records) where still were Gimmik, Maps and Diagrams, Ochre. Track Irreverse from the project is a mystery, melodic and a recognized melancholy. The album with the same name prepares for the edition on Collaps Records - a label, the based Vladimir Hropov aka Randomajestiq.

Neotnas - big debut on Dars records the known project in Ural which structure includes three musicians which does not manage, perhaps, any large festival of independent music in Ural (Russia): Electroline (Chelyabinsk), I.D.M.ology (Ekaterinburg), and thematic cool parties in club Garage Undergrounds (Chelyabinsk).

Matsutake - Evgeniy Gorbunov, a musician living in Khabarovsk - a city in the Russian Far East.
The sound of the project is based on computer improvisation with acoustic sounds. After processing and configuration sounds are built in freakish pictures, having separated from subjects from which have been once taken. They start to live own life, in their communications there is no neither sense, nor a plot, everything, that we need - to observe from the party as sounds that are strewed, as if from a bag run into blessed minimalism outvoice each other mutter something amicably and harmoniously.
For track Radioboy records of group Dobranoch, and also a sound of a teflon frying pan from which after processing it has turned out quite tolerable bell sounds have been used. Softness of a sound was provided with a pack of a chocolate iris which Eugeny and knocked on a frying pan.
Album Matsutake « NINE and SEVENTEEN » is recently issued by Ukrainian label Nexsound.

Rachmiel - Rick Scott, the musician from Rochester, the known programmer in musical Reaktor environment, the composer, the author of music of project F'loom. The track is written specially for compilation with use Bartok's Microkosmos.

The electronic variations created FraweWatcher (Dmitry Makarov), are constant experiments with making details, laborious search of an ideal sound. In genuine, not sample creativity much depends on the author, and only integral persons with thin soul are capable to create rather qualitative product. FraweWatcher just concerns to such musicians.

Aa1 - Vasily Kuznetsov from Ekaterinburg, - the Ural master of performance, which concept are always unexpected and very interesting. All compositions are created with the help of own algorithms developed in program PD environment and sounds, basically written down with own hand from a microphone. In a track « Vodking with ghosts » the sounds taken from an accordion …. and a case from it are used. The name of a track reflects a visual image of the author of music - the empty wooden house, the simple Russian man sits at the big table and drinks vodka, not noticing flying around of ghosts which clap doors, creak, rustle and try to intimidate him.

Nole plastique - the project working in a genre of electroacoustics. From his debut on Dars records in compilation “Music of Deneb.2099”, the project was issued on such labels as 20kbps rec, Otium, Electrosound. In track Unsucsessfull Variations, themes of great composer Rakhmaninov are used. It sounds similarly to mixture of Russian piano works and Oval’s music. This music very vital also is worthy to be end of this collection.

Dars Records is an independent Russian label dedicated to varied genres of intelligent electronica (IDM, glitch, ambient, abstract and others) and based in the area of the South Urals (Chelyabinsk to be precise). While this remote location may come as something of a surprise for some, it may partially explain the strong component of traditional Russian folk music in this curious and eclectic compilation of experimental electronics.
For the most part, the music in "Slavosonic" is extremely evocative of landscapes, untamed nature, history and tradition: from Lapland and the margins of the Volga to the deepest taiga and tundra, from the Siberian shamanic tradition to Orthodox Christianity. This is an obvious result from the skill with which, in most tracks, traditional folk elements (whether 'just' sampled or actually performed) are weaved with more modern electronic music into rich suggestive sonic tapestries. This is particularly noticeable in the first two-thirds of the compilation, with the second third focussing more on glitch and voiceless compositions and the final third veering off towards more 'conventional' territories in the fields of experimental electronic music.
An important and evident aspect of this compilation, is the extreme care and attention to detail that was put into the composition of every track (which is hardly surprising considering the quality of the releases by ILI, one of the label's artists and its manager). Another other striking aspect is how the artists succeeded in 'humanizing' music styles that frequently are cold and impersonal by resorting to the incorporation of traditional melodies and singing, creating organic wholes with actual 'souls'. Tracks like "Olyushka", "Deep Blue", "Kruchu" and "Jakby Sontze Znalo" are particularly good examples for which the opening track, an interpretation of a Lappish jingle, paved the way. This 'soul', even though less 'human' can also be felt in tracks like "Valenkee", "Flow" and "Vodking With Ghosts", which consist of sound manipulation of field recordings or traditional music tunes.
One thing that is missing in this release is information about the participating artists. While it may be readily available to anyone with an Internet connection and a modicum of googling skills, it would be nice to have it available at one's fingertips when listening to the album.
In the end, "Slavosonic" is an excellent horizon-opening listening experience, sure to appeal to anyone with varied music tastes. While it is certainly a 'themed' compilation, it is also a label sampler and, judging from it, Dars Records is a rather promising label.
