DEBARGE COVER STORY

"I've never heard anyone sound quite like him, and with so much ease," producer Bernd Lichters has said. "I knew I saw a star." Lichters worked with former White Heat members Bobby DeBarge and Gregory Williams (a schoolmate of Bobby's) to launch the pioneering soul-pop group Switch."

"While Bobby was working on that second Switch album, Mark and Randy DeBarge visited Los Angeles to see what their brothers were up to. Before long Bunny, Mark, Randy, El, and James made the journey west. Lichters leased a five-bedroom house and took them to buy instruments."

2007 - Vibe Magazine

GROUP HISTORY:
SMASH was first released in Europe by Polydor Germany in 1977 under the title Hot Ice, which was the follow up to White Heat (RCA 1974), a name Barry White controlled, but released the band and formed the Motown group Switch. In 1979 the album was released by Source/MCA under the group name SMASH, where Randy, Mark and El DeBarge were included in the group backing up this album. Consequently Motown signed DeBarge.
This album is for Funk and Soul lovers. You can listen to some real earthy Funk composed and played by Bobby DeBarge on the piano, Tommy DeBarge on the bass, Greg Williams on the piano and trumpet, Arnett Hayes on the organ, Jody Sims drums, Phillip Ingram percussion, plus former members T.C. Brown, Stanley Brown, Darnell Wyrick, Stanley Hood.

Recorded at Owl Recording Studios in Columbus, Ohio.

Mixed at the classic Paramount Recording Studio in Hollywood, California by Legendary Engineers Roger Dollarhide(RIP) & Peter Haden
(Engineers of Sly and The Family Stone, Bobby Womack, Ike and Tina Turner)

Remastered for CD in Hamburg/Germany.

Rare Funk Classic Gets Wide Release
Attention all funk fans, jazz cats, and crate digging DJs. Want that authentic 70s sound filled with talented instrumentals and first rate production? Buy this CD. From German funk impressario Bernd Lichters comes this re-release of the 1977 Hot Ice CD. Eight super funky and soulful tracks fill the musical landscape from a variety of talent including the late Bobby DeBarge and Gregory Williams who would follow this release by becoming very successful with the late 70s/early 80s Motown group Switch. Catch this one for the outstanding track "Please Don't Let Me Go" with Bobby cooking on lead vocals and also "I'm Gonna Give My Whole Life to Music" which features the talented Arnett Hayes on the lead. This will be a treasure everybody will be wanting years in the future so grab yourself one of the limited copies available here and melt the ice off the dancefloor. CD includes booklet with several pictures and history of the performers included. A must have for any fans of Switch or Debarge.
