Album Notes
The extraordinary vocalist and songwriter Sora, who titled her new album Scorpion Moon, believes artists need to show both sides of life -- the light and the dark, joy and sorrow, urban versus nature, birth/rebirth but also death, ancient and modern, this physical realm as well as otherworldly places.

Sora is known for her strong, pure voice -- powerful and commanding one moment, then soft, caressing and reassuring the next. Her vocals have operatic qualities, yet are as accessible as a folk-singer. Her singing is noble, reverent, passionate and confident. Her music is melodic and genre-crossing with elements of new age, modern-classical, Celtic, world-fusion, folk and pop.

Sora, who has a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Psychology, has a deep interest in mythology, fairytales, archetypes, feminism, society’s collective consciousness, and narratives that illuminate life’s passages. On her fourth studio album, Scorpion Moon, Sora delves deeply into stories, both mythic and modern, that transcend time and place, boldly claiming the complexity of contradictory truths within the emotional landscapes that shape our own personal stories. Light and dark, joy and sorrow, urban versus nature, birth/rebirth but also death, ancient and modern, Sora delicately balances it all to provide music that is at once ethereal and grounded.

Her original poetic lyrics tell timeless stories inspired by ancient myths, children’s fairytales, nature’s wonders and modern conflicts. Her sound is primarily acoustic with occasional electronic shading; and it gets its classical influences from piano, cello, violin and flute; its folk background from acoustic guitar and mandolin; and its world flavors from the Celtic harp, erhu, bamboo flute, dizi, pennywhistle, charango and various ethnic percussion instruments.

“I titled my new album Scorpion Moon not only because I liked the natural-world imagery,” explains Sora, “but because it represents the meshing of opposing synergies – the shadow in light, the complexity of contradictory truths within our emotional landscapes along with the ongoing struggle to discern the roots of what moves and shapes us. There are many threads leading to every emotion, and some are opposing, like a shiver of sadness within a feeling of happiness, or unexpected consequences when loving someone.”

“I am not trying to re-create something from the past, but I feel it is important to explore classic traditions and tales, to hold them up and see why these stories have been passed down for generations, and study what makes them meaningful now. These are stories of what it means to be human, and often they hold secret keys that can open doors in our lives. I am trying to bridge many worlds and examine the interconnections that hold it all together. I want to present truths that transcend time, place and worlds.”

SORA BLENDS NEW AGE, FOLK, NEO-CLASSICAL AND WORLD MUSIC ON NEW CD
The spectacularly-soaring singer Sora has created a beautiful vocal album, Scorpion Moon. Her voice is something to behold. The music behind her voice is subtle, mostly-acoustic and played to perfection by some of the top classical and world-music musicians in Canada.

Sora grew up studying and playing both folk and classical music, two very-different genres, but the juxtaposition deepened her musical knowledge and prepared her to create her own unique music with elements from many different styles. Now her sound crosses boundaries from new age to folk to pop to Celtic to modern-classical.

Many of Sora’s original songs are based on ancient tales passed down for hundreds of years -- a thousand-and-one-Arabian-nights (“Scheherazade”), Rapunzel (“The Tower”), The Little Mermaid (“Mermaid’s Song”), and The Pied Piper (“Piper”). But these are fresh takes on the old stories. Sora also sings of various arch-types such as the “Hero” and the “Savage.”

She follows in the tradition of singer-songwriters such as Loreena McKennitt, Enya, Sarah McLachlan, Tori Amos, Jewel and Amy Lee (of Evanescence), all of whom were influential inspirations. But Sora’s powerful and pure voice is her own, and her songwriting also has its own literary distinctiveness.

This recording is highly-recommended for listeners who enjoy soaring mystical vocalists, world-tinged ethereal music, and adventurous lyrics.

Una voz dulce y poderosa al mismo tiempo.
Muchos de los álbumes que recibimos se suelen centrar en un instrumento en concreto, o bien poseen cientos de sonidos electrónicos, pero muy pocas veces podemos disfrutar de un CD en el que el principal instrumento es una voz dulce e intensa que consigue seducirnos. Así es la voz de Sora, cantante canadiense que por sorpresa, descubrió que con su voz, podría llegar a la gente. El último trabajo de Sora se llama Scorpion Moon, un fantástico álbum producido por el ganador del premio Juno, Douglas Romanow, y que además de los sintetizadores de este gran productor, Sora ve acompañada su voz con las percusiones de Ray Dillard, las diferentes arpas de Sharlene Wallace, las guitarras de Jason Fowler, las flautas de Ron Korb y Ernie Toller, los chelos de Ana Uceda y Wendy Solomon, y el erhu de Xiaoqiu Lin.

La primera pieza es “Scheherazade (Scorpion Moon)”, la composición que da título al álbum. Una canción con aires orientales, donde Sora canta una historia. Bajo una producción magnífica y una melodía muy atractiva, cálida, son canciones que invitan a ser escuchadas con atención.

Son claras las influencias de Sora, y en este segundo track podemos verlas surgir levemente. “Hiraeth” es una composición más rápida que la pista que abría el álbum y jugando con diferentes entonaciones, algunos fragmentos recuerdan con fuerza a la música, de la también canadiense, Loreena Mckennitt.

En “Hero” podemos disfrutar de la voz desnuda de Sora, donde sólo arpa y guitarra le acompañan con cuidados acordes y suaves rasgueos. Con canciones como “Hero”, uno se percata del poder de su canto, la artista podría llegar a octavas imposibles.

Una de las más rítmicas del álbum es “Savage”, donde Sora mezcla su intrépido canto con las percusiones y la flauta, lo que le ofrece al tema un misterio interesante.

Un descanso para los sentidos es Mermaid Song, un track muy inclinado al género celta. Esta es otra de las grandes piezas del álbum. Donde realmente se disfruta la voz de Sora son en las piezas más relajadas y delicadas, es cuando su tono es cariñoso y reserva mucha calidez.

“City” es otro de los tracks con ritmos cortados que mantienen al oyente atento a todo lo que surgirá más tarde. Con diferentes fragmentos, la composición va tomando diversas formas, como si varias piezas se incluyeran en una sola.

Nuevamente una de las piezas más celtas del álbum, “The Tower”. En este tema, Sora dobla su voz en algunos momentos claves, un punto interesante que llama la atención del oyente. Junto a la voz de Sora, cabe destacar el segundo instrumento predominante de la pieza, la flauta. En este tema, la flauta le da un toque único a la pista, marca la diferencia!.

Otra de mis preferidas es “Hold”. En esta pieza, la cantante juega con los tonos creando diferentes melodías agradables. Al igual que la composición anterior, Sora dobla su voz dando énfasis en algunos instantes. La belleza de “Hold” reside en el perfecto tandem entre chelo y voz, integrando silencios vocales para que el chelo nos ilumine con sus notas.

Tranquila y reservada es “Piper”, otra de las composiciones apacibles de Scorpion Moon. Aunque distinguimos percusiones y cuerdas, la música no es para nada vertiginosa y el canto de Sora, es un susurro.

“Proof of Life (The Velveteen Rabbit)”, melancólica y muy bella. El canto de Sora es un hermoso lamento que acaricia nuestros sentidos. “Proof of Life” es otra de esas canciones que es una verdadera delicia escuchar. Es cálida, dulce, amable… Me gusta!.

Para cerrar Scorpion Moon, continuamos con el relax creado por el track anterior. “Moving On” apareció como banda sonora para el corto cinematográfico del mismo nombre, dirigido por Bryan P. Hunt. “Moving On” es, sin duda, una de las mejores piezas que podemos descubrir en este álbum. Esta última pieza es pasión, coraje… Fascinante!.


Sora no sólo canta, esta magnifica artista canadiense narra historias cubiertas por una voz dulce y poderosa al mismo tiempo, una voz que en algunos momentos profundizarán con fuerza en el interior. Quizás unas melodías más pegadizas hubiesen sorprendido más, pero lo que es indiscutible, es que a esta excepcional cantante, no le costará en absoluto alcanzar el éxito. Scorpion Moon es un álbum muy recomendable!.

The Canadian songstress’s latest album is a great showcase for her vocal and compositional abilities, taking pages so to speak from sources as diverse as ancient myths and children’s fairy tales.

Sora’s lyrics are full of vivid imagery and heartfelt emotion, inspired as they are by her passion for literature and her strong stance on love and relationships.

Sora breathes life into these poetic musings with her supple voice, which commands your attention with its stream-like fluidity and in-your-face (in a good way) urgency. She has a unique style all her own, which is refreshing in the current climate of unreasonable facsimiles and unflattering imitation.

The songs are also richly adorned with solid, sparkling instrumentation. In addition to playing piano on one track, Sora has assembled a fine ensemble of musicians. This exquisite group takes the music effortlessly through a variety of genre forms, including pop, new age, Celtic, classical, and orchestral.

For those looking for a different listening experience, the CD provides a welcome detour from the usual expectations.
