"Sneak Attack?" is the first studio release from California ska band Soup Sandwich. Recorded at Inverted Mongoose Records in Santa Rosa, California, the demo features songs all written and arranged by Soup Sandwich. Remarkably, all capture for the demo was done in just 4 days in the studio, and was mostly mixed and mastered with the studio engineer over Facebook.
"Sneak Attack?" brings a new look to the modern ska scene, as it mixes a diverse of ska influences into a single format. Much of the music is heavily influenced by third wave ska groups, but it brings more old school and current approaches into the fray, with intermingled horn lines, a diverse horn section, intricate drum and bass rhythms ,and a more two-tone styled guitar driving the action. It is a hearty dose of ska likely to rouse old school ska lovers and rude boys of the 21st century alike.
The first song of the demo, "Three Days", is a upbeat tune that many can relate to - the heartbreak of a romance gone sour. It's catch melody will have you belting lyrics out in the shower, in the car, and in the dentist's chair (maybe not that last one). Speakeasy, the 2nd track, harkens back to the USA's prohibition era, and speaks in the slang of the times, noting the exciting life of a moonshiner. Bigger Fish, a driving rock/ska fusion tune, closes the demo on a more progressive note, shifting through mixed meter choruses and polyphonic solo sections, all while remaining accessible and even danceable for the musician and music lover alike. It stresses the importance of not sweating the small stuff in life, a message very near and dear to the Soup Sandwich philosophy.
All in all, "Sneak Attack?" is a labor of love from an entirely self-managed, self-produced, and self-motivated independent ska band. We hope you enjoy the tunes!
