ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Album Notes
This CD showcases the work of Spires founder Colin Touchin, with three works centred on Coventry history and legends, written in a modern but approachable and exciting style. The Spires Philharmonic Orchestra opens with the Coventry Suite, a set of twelve variations representing the mediaeval gates of the City. They are joined by the Spires Philharmonic Chorus for St. George of Coventry, using mediaeval texts concerning the legend that England's patron saint hailed from the City. The whole ensemble in completed by choirs from three Coventry primary schools, singing words they wrote themselves on their reactions to the mediaeval painting of the Last Judgement in the church of Holy Trinity Coventry. This large-scale cantata, Choose the Light, illustrates vocally and musically the choices confronting every human being.

Colin Touchin, formerly Director of Music at the University of Warwick, has a distinguished record as conductor and composer. He is currently Associate Conductor - London Charity Orchestra, Principal Guest Conductor Essex Chamber Orchestra, Founder/Conductor - Spires Philharmonic Orchestra & Chorus in Coventry, Conductor - Derbyshire City and County Youth Wind Band. He has founded several ensembles including the National Youth Recorder Orchestra, and has conducted the National Youth Wind Orchestras of Britain, Luxembourg, Hong Kong and Wales, and the Hong Kong Youth Orchestra. He founded Spires Music as a collaborative professional-amateur ensemble in 2004 and started the Spires Youth Orchestra in 2012.
