Album Notes
Stephen Jay is a bassist, vocalist, and multi-instrumentalist. His original music is Bass-driven, innovative, exotic Funk, blending world influenced polyrhythmic grooves with elements of Jazz and Rock. Combinations of ethnic and modern instruments result in unique, richly textured musical images.

Stephen\'s bass recording credits include 3 Grammy winners and 9 Grammy nominated albums. He is the credited bassist on 9 Gold and 5 Platinum albums (RIAA). Stephen specializes in combining ethnic and modern instruments to create a blend of the exotic and contemporary. He has scored more than seventy nationally broadcast PBS specials and series episodes, including three George Foster Peabody Award winners, and contributed to several feature films. His background includes a BA and MM Graduate Fellowship in composition, and studies with composers John Cage, Lucas Foss, Max Neuhaus and Charles Wuronien. Stephen’s past work includes performing and
recording with Wayne Shorter, Hugh Masekela, Alex Acuna, Luis Conte, Isah Hamani, Joe Higgs, Betty Buckley, Jimmy Haskell and others. He is an original and continuing member of Al Yankovic’s band. Stephen’s bass and drum duo, “Ak & Zuie” has toured the US, Canada, and Australia, and has appeared PBS. His world music experience includes performance and studies throughout West Africa and Southeast Asia. From his field recording of world music Stephen produced 2 albums for the Nonesuch Explorer Series.

An exotic yet familiar journey with words and music
Discovering Stephen Jay’s music is very similar to finding that one unique book sitting on the corner shelf in a cozy book shop. After opening the pages you forget where you’re standing – the store around you disappears as you immerse yourself into another world that is both familiar and exotic. I experienced this nearly a year ago purchasing all 4 CDs and since have enjoyed listening as well as dancing, writing, painting or traveling to Stephen’s eclectic blend of melody, rhythm and lyrics. When people ask me what Stephen Jay’s music sounds like, I normally answer with “Stephen Jay.” I can’t put a single label on such a diverse collection of songs – songs that still feel part of a cohesive whole spanning all of his albums.

Stephen’s poetry sparks the listener’s imagination – much like viewing a painting where the viewer superimposes their own narrative into the picture. It’s not uncommon for me to be listening to this music where in the midst of enjoying the texture of instrumentation to suddenly remember how it felt running through a field near where a friend grew up – or how the clouds looked one early evening when I was 10 years old. When first listening to this album I avoided reading the lyrics in the booklet wanting instead the words to emerge along with the music. Words like “Happy like children, Empty like cauldrons” resonate on a deeper level when sung to the haunting melody in “Trouble.” “Zoom me to the left if I don’t find a way” in “Pancake Potential” is as much part of the rhythm as it is lyrics.

The music on Sea Never Dry beautifully weaves jazz, African instruments and rhythms as well as other international sounds. Within a few tracks this diverse blend starts to feel like its own new style. Ti Bo Ma speaks “Africa” in words and music. "Deny the Accuser" seems to capture an international jazz carnival or marketplace. "Wait For Me" feels more North American with its acoustic and electric guitars. While every song on the album is unique all use similar elements from this new musical “language”.

This CD is for people who wish to expand their idea of what music is and can be. For those wanting to be taken far away to places like Africa or to their own imaginations. There are many evenings I will play the last track “Trouble” on repeat – becoming immersed in the music while the room seems to fade into the background.
