Solace for Seasons of Suffering

by Steve Bell

Steve's sonorous tenor voice and gentle, melodic fingerstyle guitar (reminiscent of Dan Fogelburg)have a restive and orienting restorative quality matched by the scriptural and mystical verse he tends to draw on for lyrical content.

SOLACE For Seasons Of Suffering
A new double compilation CD from Steve Bell

In a culture that sometimes seems deeply committed to the denial of pain, Steve Bell’s new project brings us face to face with two significant realities:

To be human is to sometimes suffer. We need not suffer without solace.

About a year ago, Steve received an email from a friend who was then suffering from renal cancer. Ben wrote rather eloquently about the upholding nature of some of Steve’s songs, and how those recordings had carried him and his family through the many difficulties of his failing health.

He went on to say, “I want to see a ‘sustaining’ CD from Steve Bell, a compilation that would help those who are dying and those who love them – to bring peace and comfort... (and) understanding. What songs would be there? Which would help most for someone dealing with loss – the passing of a loved one – helping them face death and passing?”

The idea ignited an immediate sense of passion and urgency in Steve and the Signpost Music team. Despite the unusual nature of the project, it felt like it could be done, and it should be done.

And so, (with detailed suggestions from Ben), a list of suitable songs was compiled. Five songs chosen from earlier albums were sounding rather dated and were freshly rerecorded for Solace. A project draft was evaluated by people immersed in the world of palliative care and by gracious people presently in the midst of their own suffering. This process helped focus and refine content and presentation. It was also determined that an edited version of the previously released Volume 2 of the Listening In Audio Magazine, Can God Be Trusted?, would be a fitting compliment to the 14 songs chosen for this two CD set.

Solace – For Seasons of Suffering is now completed. Most of the songs on Disc One are derived from ancient prayers, poems and Psalms. They are redolent, musically and lyrically, with the sustaining character that Ben Mclean envisioned. Disc Two offers honest conversation with fellow sufferers, and gently probes some of the great questions raised by suffering.

Steve makes this offering with the hope that Solace will be “a welcome and helpful resource for the journey we all make to the One who created and sustains us through every kind of day”.

Is there suffering?
But there is also Solace – For Seasons of Suffering.

This album really is a gift .. Steve's music truly does convey Solace in troubled times.

Beyond that, the CD set includes a bonus "Listening In" disc that explores topics related to that age-old question, why do we suffer? It's a profoundly helpful treatment of a difficult and complex subject.
