"Somewhere To Fight For" is a new Australian children's musical - with a difference. Written by award winning composer Drew Lane, Somewhere To Fight For tells the story of the town of Wickliffe which is on the verge of dying.
What makes Somewhere To Fight For unique is its purpose.
Wickliffe, the town the musical is set in, is a real town and one of many small country towns around Australia that are struggling to survive in the 21st century. The background, history and storyline that Somewhere To Fight For is based on is all true. St Peter's Primary School, and composer Drew Lane, took the show out of the city of Melbourne and to Wickliffe itself, as a show of support, solidarity and to join communities together.
"Somewhere To Fight For" is a musical that hits right at the heart of the problem - how can small townships survive? And while we may be looking at it from the perspective of a child, maybe that's what we all need to learn to do - to have faith like a child, dream big like a child, and believe that we all can make a difference. Edward Everett Hale once wrote: "I'm only one, but still I am one. I cannot do everything, but I can do something, and because I cannot do everything, I will not refuse to do that something I can do."
"Somewhere To Fight For" is our attempt to do something about what we see as a great tragedy. In the end, if we bring one new person to the area, or impact one person to do something more, or simply reach out a helping and understanding hand to the people of the area, then we have achieved more than we could have done than if we did nothing at all.
