Album Notes
Strokeland Superband is the creation of Tower of Power's Doc Kupka. "The Funky Doctor," as he's often called, is a prolific songwriter. Doc and Strokeland co-producer, Jeff Tamelier, assembled an all-star entourage for this soulful undertaking.

Doc was looking for a creative way to release some of his many songs and for the opportunity to work with some of his favorite performers. The performers range from past Tower of Power members,Lenny Pickett (now Saturday Night Live band leader) and Mic Gillette to vocalists such as Huey Lewis and Bill Champlin.Band members: Vocalists include: Huey Lewis (Huey Lewis and the News),Bill Champlin (Sons of Champlin), Mickey Thomas (Starship), Frank Biner, Glenn Walters, John Lee Sanders, Emilio Castillo (Tower ofPower) and Melisa Kary (Starship).Doc Kupka, Mic Gillette, Lenny Pickett, Dave Stone, Marvin McFadden,Tim Acosta, John Mizutani, Bill Churchville, Johnny Bamont, David Woodford, David Garibaldi, Jeff Tamelier, Francis Rocco Prestia, Jim Pugh, Johnny Colla, Brett Bloomfield, Eric Westphal.

Strokeland Superband - Kick it up a Step!
Unbelieveable "Funk" from the Master Bari Sax player from Tower of Power. I am highly impressed with the lineup of musicans and singers. The horn section blows like crazy and the rythym section is super tight. "We could make a cool hang" is super slammin' and funky.

My best to the band, keep up the great work!!!!!

Wonderful Funk music
When you are living on the "other side" of the Atlantic, particularly in Germany, you have a problem to find great Funk Music. Of coure, several fans do know Tower of Power, but less about the musical activities of their outstanding members. Internet is a wonderful opportunity to find music you probably would have missed. The CD "Kick It Up A Step!" is one of these great chances. Wonderful Funk music, catchy sounds, great vocalists, Tameliers guitar, the brass section... Just 1 or 2 songs are conventional Big Band stuff, but the rest is really moving you! Kick it up!

Music with the Oakland stroke
Hey, I don't just live on the wrong side of the country, I live on the wrong side of the Atlantic, wha'd I know about Oakaland anyway? Well I've seen the light and I've seen the T-shirt, it said "Oakland - They done found the stroke" and I put 2 and 2 together. Oakland stroke: Strokeland. Ya got it yet or do I gotta paint a picture?... This is Oakland via the Tower of Power, who by amazing coincidence all appear on the album in one form or another, along with many other stage and session musos. The Strokeland Superband actually IS a superband.

Music wise they spread their wings a little wider than their progenitors. The opening track, 'It may be very good' is very nearly ToP, but overall the album stretches from there to the Northern soul of 'Kick it up a step'. This one'll fill the floor of any soul all nighter you care to mention.

The whole thing is fastened to the floor by the most boffo rhythm section you're going to hear in a long time, the horns are as perfect as a really perfect thing on a very nice day, and the selection of vocalists add just that little touch of variety that those that suffer from funk-fatigue require to keep them on their feet to the end of the album.

You thought you might listen to it sitting down?

Forget it!

Sweet! Doc Kupka and the crew are throwin' down some Top Notch funk here. Strokeland Records is a long over due project that I'm sure will continue to gift us with fine, handpicked fruit of the Funk.

It is right there with the other Strokeland Band CDs -- it's great!
These are all great new songs -- Kick It Up a Step is the best, but Dump the Chump will find its way into my band's book too. Marvin McFadden did an awesome trumpet solo on A Jump on the Millennium. All great funk!

Lovely funky tunes. I specaly like Let´s do funk. Isn´t that funk down to the bone. No circumstances. Right on the money. Like the title says. Let´s do funk. Smart stuff.
