ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Album Notes
"A hybrid of swing-jazz and funky soul" says Steve Butler, lead vocalist and bass guitarist with the Swingdoctors. As an Australian 5-piece band incorporating a hot rhythm section with Sax, Guitar and Keyboards, their live shows provide musical intensity, improvisation with a "good soul feeling". This is captured on their latest CD, Soul Tonic.

From the opening track "Swinging Time" to the bands remake of Roy Montrells "Wild Saxophone", it's a mix that reflects the energy and diverse style of 5 musicians who really enjoy what they do.

Formed in early 1998, the band was a product of the Yeppoon Jazz Club. Original members, Steve Butler and Greg Henderson (Horns) are joined by Damian Clark (Guitar, Banjo), Peter Schravemade (Keys) and Stephen Robin (Drums and percussion). The band has gone on to be active on the Australian festival circuit playing a steady diet of live performances.

Easy album to listen to.
I dig it!! Very cool cd, piano player is fantastic, and songs are great. Just one of those in your collection you can put on before bed.

Soul Tonic - diverse influences
This is not your standard run of the mill Soul CD. The songs are catchy and I find stick with you, without being tacky. The groove based songs are very hip and funky, whilst others spill into a more reflective view. However, the mix of genres provides for an all-round 'balanced' CD. Influences may have been Keb Mo, B.B. King, and older blues artists, e.g, blues brothers albums etc...

In the playing it is quite evident there are jazz and blues roots, and overall the musicians seem to be accomplished. Some cool keyboard work on this album. Generally the performance styles obviously range and seemingly this group are an eclectic mix of several styles.

As I have no other information on this group I cannot compare this CD with any other of theirs in the past.
