Album Notes
For the love of music! Smokin¹ with Superman is it, one of the best and most original bands to come out the Midwest in years. SWS was born in 1999 and has been turning heads and shaking asses with its unique blend of hip-hop, funk, r&b, and jazz ever since. SWS has been branded ³the best band on Madison stages,² and has earned the respect of fans and musicians across the region. And now, with the release of their first full-length CD, Full Price, the SWS crew is looking to smear themselves over the map.

SWS melts musical genres, creating a vibe that is distinctly their own. Think about hosting a party where The Roots meet Sade, The Brand New Heavies meet Outkast, Liquid Soul meets Grant Green and Jill Scott and Common stop in for a drink. It¹s a blend that has sonic punch, blinding you with infectious grooves, then guiding you with stellar vocals and intelligent musicianship. Accessible yet always challenging, they are the answer to the question ³what's hot?² And oh can shake your ass to it.

SWS is a collection of some of Madison¹s premiere musicians, including two of the most venomous vocalists to grace the stage: Mr. Parker and Joy Dragland. Parker¹s East Coast flavored taste on modern hip-hop (melodic, conscious, intelligent, somewhat cocky) delivers a sex-like compliment to the hypnotic touch of Joy Dragland¹s sultry, jazz-inflected voice. Underneath, drummer Mark Heise and bassman Brett Farrey set a course on the rhythm section Enterprise to warp 9. Keyboardist Mark Siegenthaler and guitarist Shanan Galligan are the yin and yang in the chord change chamber. And the icing on the cake, the SWS horn section led by the young veteran, Bryan Elliott, stabs, slides, and screams the catchy hooks fusing this ³next shit² band to the next level.

i dont give this cd 5 stars, it's a 10 stars cd!!! this is if not the greatest combination of funk, R&B, rap, jazz it's in the top 2, being this #1. i first heard this band on 2002, and this cd was back ordered, and as soon a CD BABY let me know that is was available, without hesitation i bought it.

the sound of all instruments are great, the lyrics fantastic, all wind instruments combine that perfect sound for the funk that these guys play. i totally recomend it

Wow - buy this CD!
I wasn't 100% sure when I bought this CD, as I'd never heard it, but it was strongly recommended so I thought, why not! How glad was I, if you like your Jazz this side of hip hop with a light coating of funk, buy this record. In fact, just buy it even if you don't as you soon will!

Something for everyone
Yo! AFter listening to Full Price, you won't need any other CD. You want jazz? Got it! You want hip-hop? Got it? Even a little disco? Got that too! Something for everyone on this CD! Love it!

Being moved never sounded so good . . .
Smokin’ With Superman’s Full Price is better understood as an experience, or perhaps a state of mind, than as a garden variety album. It isn’t so much what you hear when you listen to the sounds coming from your speakers after you pop the disc in the player, it’s how you feel. The eclectic mix of hip-hop, rock and jazz stirs something deep within your soul; a part of you that some people theorize can only be touched through the profound musical genius of greats like Mozart and Beethoven. The reality? This album has that spark, that fire, that makes a person feel alive in the truest sense of the word.

Entrepreneurs in Jazz
I first caught this band while in college 5 year ago. I was searching for a new, innovative jazz band. My search was immediately over when I hit Smokin' with Superman. Their sound is totally amazing and full of energy. Never before have I heard such a tight and committed band. Every note is a musical miracle. Get this album and you`ll be impressing all your friends like I've been doing for the past 5 years :).

One of those rare CD's you TOTALLY dig
I'm not sure what Greg Hill's complaint is, but this CD sounds great, and TOTALLY funks things up. The horns are tight, the lyrics are quality, the raps are great, and the rhythm section is in the pocket. Not one track on here I don't totally dig. Kudos especially to their keys & bass players.

The best things always seem to come out of Madison
Well not really, I'm just saying that cuz that's my hometown. But yeah, I haven't taken the CD out of my player for a good couple of weeks now, so I assume that means that I like it...A LOT! I'd pay twice full price for Full Price anyday.

Greg Hill

Good songs, but sound?
I give the music 4 stars and the recording 1 or 2 stars. Another case of a fine band putting out their home demos...ugh! I watch this genre like a hawk and enthusiastically check out every band on it, but I am very fussy about sound so take it for what it’s worth. I think the group should hang in there and try again.

Awesome funk that brings you to another level
I was introduced to this album by Shannon's dad about 3 years ago and have been addicted to it ever since!!! Everytime I need to relax from just get away from work, I'd listen to this album from beginning to the end. I feel like I'm in trance when I listen to it...cos it brings me into this loungey mood that makes me drop everything I'm working on. Too bad they're not together anymore..was really looking for their next album...= (

Great crossover CD
It's not unusual for hip hop groups to cross over into rock but a band that can pull off a three way crossover Hip Hop / Jazz / Rock-funk on the same CD is very unusual indeed.

If you are stil skeptical, take a listen to the sample songs... the non sample songs are just as good.

Bottom line, this CD "smokes" and deserves to be in your collection.
