032208 Be still and know... a knot on the wall, the floor, or a peanut ...until you know it from all the rest, so that if someone put your peanut into a bowl of peanuts, you could pick it out. That is my interpretation today of Be still and know. It's Easter, the Resurrection. Pain to Joy. Pick yourself up. Be still. Echoing advice, reaching its destination. Thank you from the Walls of Time.

030508 On my walk at Brookgreen Gardens today, I traded a little carbon dioxide for some oxygen from my favorite tree. He has told me some cool things before, like "Did you see that I am dancing?" Today he said, "See how I am being in my place, with all my dead ends (he is a live oak) ...and see your place." I caught the word 'being.' It resonated with a dance of breathing.

Being is perfect;
Thinking is imperfect.

Just being
In your skin,
In your place,
Like a tree,
with broken limbs
and uncertainty,
Out in the elements.
Holding onto what we know
And reaching into the unknown,
like a tree.
Being is perfect.
Not unharmed,
but perfect.

OCT 07 Thank you, NORTH CAROLINA SONGWRITERS CO-OP for selecting me to play in your Annual Songwriters Event Oct 13, in Holly Springs. It was an honor to meet those wonderful songwriters from all over the world... Dave Turner, Kate Graves, Rupert Wates, Adam Middleton, Audry Auld Mezera, and Stacey Allyn Baker. Thank you Mark Easley and Jon and Eileen Batson.

SEPT 2007 It is closet-cleaning time ..literally and figuratively.. and the schedule is sparse. And my little house has burned. It was my past, it was my future. Mickey Newbury said "the future's not what it used to be;" Tom Waits said "nothing's yours to keep." "Peace will come." Tom Paxton says that. I believe it. But the closets must be cleaned out. "Ecstacy, then the laundry." -the Dalai Lama ...if you do your own laundry.

We are looking forward to the next act in this play.
...and working on material for the next RECORD!ing project .. Thanks for your invaluable unseen support.

For the fourth year it was an honor to work with the exciting Hemlock Festival, Dahlonega GA, Nov 2-4. Look em up and consider supporting this noble effort to attend the health of our majestic Hemlocks. It's an interesting story, too. One beetle eating another beetle eating a tree! Thank you Forest Hilyer and the Lumpkin County Coalition.

After my performance at the Swannanoa Gathering Showcase 2007, Tom Paxton kissed my forehead and said to me, "You are real." (I must admit the question had crossed my mind.)

Thank you, Brooks Williams, David LaMotte, Christine Kane, Cliff Eberhart, Billy Jonas, Kate Campbell...
.................
Thank You to the 2007 Independent Music Awards.

NOV 07 Phyllis' song 'Blowin By' is included on the new CD "Breaking the Silence." These compilation CDs are published and promoted to assist the annual Benefit Concert for Suicide Prevention and Awareness in Detroit, Michigan.

** about my house OCT 07 From a letter to my friend Al Davis about the little house: "... Yes, my little house burned; it was something i had thought up for mike and me, and my dad and brothers and us built it back in 1985-86. it was beautiful wood all over ...knotty pine and cypress, only 1064 sq ft. we had built it on an acre and a half of really green and peaceful property about ten miles inland from surfside beach, near the waterway at the socastee drawbridge. Darby was born a couple of weeks after we moved in, and we lived there with a lot of cats and herbs and vegetables until she was sixteen.
then the big road (hwy 31) came thru, very slowly, and uprooted us and relocated us to murrells inlet and we bought the little house back from the highway department ... and an acre of land ...and followed it down the highway to its new home, halfway between where we were (socastee) and where we are now (murrells inlet).
[i remember on the way there was a car full of mexican boys riding along next to me in the passing lane ...not passing anything, and not going anywhere fast...pointing at the house and waving and laughing, and they were snapping photographs ...just like me.]
so for a couple of years, i spent a lot of energy and time and money putting it back together (2002-2004). michael reno helped me, best he could. my mom said "i'd never hold on to even a person like you're holding on to that house." it's up for interpretation. what was i holding
on to? i don't know. something i thought would get me there.
so we had been renting it out since then. i had figured i'd retire in it ...with a big porch all around it ...and a garden. but instead i got my fourth big letting-go experience. it's called 'the real eminent domain.' it's up for interpretation, too, i reckon, but it looks like we lose unless we choose not to. or if you don't let go, you'll fall off. thanks for asking."

101606 murrells inlet, south carolina. walking around the perimeter of brookgreen gardens is one of the finest opportunities on the planet. ...you can avoid almost all human contact and become a part of an unadulterated and startling beauty ...you begin to see amazing life happening in the bluest blues and the greenest greens imaginable... yesterday for over an hour i watched from the shade of an oak tree at the picnic pond while a grown mudslider (turtle) on the grass ever so slowly inched away from an almostgrown alligator about fifteen inches behind. brookgreen gardens is the best reason to come to the beach.
thank you, anna hyatt huntington, for your humanitarian foresight.

phyllis grew up singin the gospel in a big baptist family in georgetown county, south carolina, with the cool summertime dirt road between her toes ...and chickens under the porch. with a head full of dylan, she left the church for rock 'n roll in the early seventies ... then in the mid-eighties she left rock 'n roll to raise her young'n, and turned into a song magician on a mission. her inspiration burst and she landed on the highway in 2001. now she's on the road lookin for song lovers like you.

... WHAT SOME PEOPLE SAY ABOUT PHYLLIS ...

"Phyllis Tannerfrye is riveting and visionary..." - ANNIE GALLUP, Beat Poet Songwriter Artist

"Many of us know how difficult it is to write a song, even more to deliver the message effectively. Phyllis is blessed with the gift of an expressive delivery that enhances the tapestry she weaves with words."

sometimes there's a road sign, makes it look like you know where you're goin. i saw plenty of road signs this week. on wednesday, ...drove up to greenville and got darby from furman u (fu) and she rode with me to the flat rock wine shop. i sang a few songs at their open mic (booked july 15..with someone or two TBA) ...and we even got darby to sing one of her songs. ...she's been playin in a band at furman (they got eighty students over to coffee underground to hear them.). . . . . then on thursday, i drove the long and winding road to beautiful murphy, nc, where kevin danzig was playin at the daily grind. he let me play between his sets. . . his tips jar says 'gas money' and he wanted to give me part, but i declined, and when i got home and took my guitar out of the case, thirty one dollar bills flew up and o the dance they danced comin down . . . . . . we had 47 great music fans here for the 'evening with the girls' house concert on march 31. with cindy novelo all the way from kansas and the NEAR MISSES from Charlotte. michael murphy (and bev) from charlotte came and recorded the whole thing (we had close to a dozen folks from the charlotte area) ...

March 20, 2006
Yesterday at the Cleveland County Arts Center in Shelby NC, The Harris Brothers and Darin Aldridge knocked our socks off. Awesome talent.
Last Saturday at CDX Mixed Media in Hickory, Rufus and friends provided a welcome setting for a travelin' songwriter... great audience, lots of art and fun people, and great food. I am grateful that people will come together and listen to original music. thank you...
...and speaking of house concerts, DAVID LAMOTTE took our audience ...43 songlovers on superbowl sunday! NO one was thinkin about football)... just took em into the wild blue yonder. right in our living room in murrells inlet. amazing.

>> This coming Friday morning.. FEB 3.. get up early and drive to North Wilkesboro and look for Minton's Pawn Shop... early. 7-9am It's the Hometown Opry, WKBC's weekly community gathering for music and fun. ..and Phyllis will play (sing), and Wilkesboro's favorite hometown pickers will fill the gap. That includes the amazing Wayne Henderson, guitar maker AND player.
The NEW CD is called "Now and Then" and features 14 of the newer songs i've been playin for the last year. with some of the finest musicians you can find, including a few of western north carolina's best bluegrass boys. the fine musicians on this little record have added the magic that made it all worth doing.

In the meantime, i am grateful to cdbaby for letting me EXAGGERATE this one, and especially grateful to ALL OF YOU for supporting my songwriting dilemma.

"This is what songwriting should be; Phyllis is a winner." -Beth Judy, SUWANNEE SPRINGFEST, Live Oak, FL

"You will listen for the next twist of phrase in Phyllis' intricate lyrics and beautiful melodies. She has highly expressive vocal technique & an engaging stage presence." -Bill Beckett, WUFT-FM, Jacksonville, FL

"Phyllis has a powerful voice with bluesy overtones, and her songs are exquisitely crafted and emotionally compelling." -CHARLOTTE FOLK SOCIETY, Oct'02

MINGO CREEK, South Carolina. "Lowcountry backwater is the heart of Phyllis Tannerfrye, the songwriter. The heart, where the life starts...where the journey begins. Her music is southern, but it comes from somewhere way beyond the creeks & marshes of her Georgetown County home. The songs tell us stories about people and places. Some we want to walk right up to and touch; some we want to visit only through her voice and guitar, like the rain-soaked alley in a dark city night. She tells us about herself and she tells us about ourselves. This music is Life, and it isn't narrow in scope or subject...it moves...like water. Like a river. It takes us past places so familiar that we know exactly where they are, but she shows them to us from another side...from the river. And she takes us into canyons that we would never think to enter without her as guide. It's a long river...and a wonderful ride. Welcome aboard." ... -MICHAEL RENO HARRELL, the Producer ...voted Charlotte's Best Songwriter / also MERLEFEST Song Champion.

LYRICS ... OLD WOMAN:

...
i am an old, old woman
i'm old and free at last
free of the trouble and heartache
i could not let go in the past

trouble keeps the women busy
and heartache would keep me on the ground
but I got to let go every worry
and hold on this freedom i've found

trouble comes knockin at my back door every day
i don't listen what that cold wind say
it keeps me rockin, can't stop it anyway
but there's a blue, blue sky above this cloudy day

sometimes i can see my light come shinin
all the way from abraham to me
when the light is bigger than the shadow
the blue sky is easy to see

trouble comes knockin. . .

yeah, i-i, i'm an old, old woman
and i know i did not come here to stay
everybody on this train goin somewhere
and somewhere there's an uncloudy day

trouble comes knockin. . .

"daddy said we need to keep on prayin
for each other til the kingdom comes.2X
not just sunday mornin, no the time to pray is now
workin in the garden, children hold on to your plow.

daddy said we need to see the beauty
in each other and around us too.2X
not just in the people, no, no, not just you & me
beauty all around us only open eyes can see, yeah.

"i'm a road sign on your way to heaven...
and here you come outa the blue...
you come a guzzalin and revvin...
and i just get one fleeting glimpse of you..
but i'm standin my ground, hopin you will see
no matter where you're bound, you can follow me...
...
i become a yield sign to keep you from colliding...
just a reminder, WE GOTTA GIVE ..."

...PHYLLIS NOTES:

JULY 05 ... We got to work in the Kruger Brothers' Studio last week, Wilkesboro ...great experience, wonderful people. now i'm listening to lots of tracks...great musicians...it's like working backwards. . . i hope it won't SOUND backwards..
i like WALKING backwards...especially on the beach, near my home, at Huntington State Park. the beach is wide, and i can close my eyes and walk backwards for a long time. it's a great thing to do, better than standing on my head.

MAY 05 We had a great time at MerleFest this year. Find the Kruger Brothers'"Carolina in the Fall"...gorgeous song.

MAR 05 Highlight of the month: off to Suwannee Springfest in Live Oak, FL with the family. We're pickin up and deliverin' musicians from the airport.

FEB 05 We got the bass tracks done! The multitalented Tom Kuhn has given us the bottom line again.. wait til you hear what he's done with MAGNET ! it's just what it wanted.
... AND we had the privilege to work with Rick Blackwell, an extremely smooth and gracious musician (he plays bass for kathy mattea).

JAN 05 It's MOLTING time... or HIBERNATION... it's a bumpy road... it's time to turn...it's not why, why, why... it just is..van morrison said part of that.. i said the rest... i had a dream and bob dylan was in it...since i was eleven he's been in my dream.. i wonder if he's ever dreamed of me
NOV 04 that trip to texas consumed us for a while. i'm still digesting it...and hoping soon to get down to following up some of the great contacts we made out there... i had six showcases over the weekend and made some great new friends. ...I FLEW!...with my guitar! and it wasn't so bad.

OCT 04 stuff takes time. joe's studio (36th st, charlotte) was struck by lightning while he was on his honeymoon. hmmm... so we're waiting for that to come back together so we can get the honorable TOM KUHN in there to put down some bass tracks. tom is an excellent musician and teacher and human being for that matter... and a great friend. he plays in a number of different configurations around charlotte and beyond with his trio LUNATIC FRINGE and his big band THE STRAGGLERS. i'm honored to have him play on my record.

SEPT 04 ...we copied the basic tracks and took em up to the 36th STREET STUDIOS, charlotte, engineered by the sound man from heaven, joe kuhlman from the EVENING MUSE ... picked up cindy novelo from the airport (all the way from lawrence, kansas) and she added her wonderful viola to "FOOTPRINTS" (me on the piano!) and on the ANGEL song.

JULY 04 ...after kerrville, we put down eight more tracks in the studio (CHARLESTON RECORDING STUDIOS, james island) and cleaned em up so they're ready for company.
... now we're studying them closely for INSTRUCTIONS. (the songs are in charge, you know.)

Marc Douglas Berardo

A fine CD by a great songwriter.
Phyllis Tannerfrye's Tomorrow stands out in the crowded world of CD's by songwriters.Phyllis got it right! Buy this CD.

Russell Clepper

I could, and have, listened to Phyllis for weeks on end.
Phyllis has a wonderfully unique voice and singing style which deliver her beautiful songs in a way that is soothing and stimulating at the same time. She can be playful, she can be dark, she can be poetically ambiguous; and she always serves the song just right with her singing and playing.

Al Davis

We need more Phyllis
I bought this CD after hearing Phyllis perform Old Woman in concert and was delighted to hear the variety of songs. Phyllis' musical universe is clearly much larger than her South Carolina lowlands roots. None of these songs are throw-aways, and they are sung with a voice just right for them. I loaned the CD to a neighbor and now I'm having trouble getting it back.

Ward Keller

from chocolate to the wrong side of town.....
Phyllis takes you on quite a journey as she unwinds her web of song. From the bittersweet "Angelina" to the rumbustious "How You Doin?" you will cry and laugh with her. A CD that will alway be in my stack of favorites.

Patricia Robinson(the Lifeteller)

I love you we need more stories told by song folk music tells a story, as does
your music tells a story and we need more stories we need to remember our past, we need more expectation of the future
thank you Patricia Robinson

Johns Maclean, The Journal

If your ear is critical AND hungry, this is the one.
This CD encompasses a range of styles, influenced by gospel,
blues, jazz, country, even a reggae twist or two. She
offers each melody like an after-church feast. You can take
what you need, and leave the rest. Many of these tunes are
open for interpretation. "Intentionally" she says.
"Open your eyes, see it for yourself..."
