Album Notes
The Begena is an ancient sacred Ethopian harp that legend teaches was made by God Himself and given to Dawit (the biblical King David) so that he may "adorn and praise His name". Temesgen took to the Begena at an early age and studied with Alemayehu Fanta at the Yared School of Music in Addis Ababa. The veteral Begena master was so impressed with his talented pupil that he gifted him his first Begena.
The Begena became his constant companion and Temesgen grew musically and spiritually as he delved deeper into the ancient texts and spiritual hymns that constitute the canon of ethiopian liturgical music. This expoloration culminated in the release of two albumns, Begena Bedtimes - a compilation of traditional hymns and King David's Harp, and album of pure instrumental Begena.
When still a youth, Temesgen - Begena in tow - immigrated to the US. Here he expaned his horizions trading knowlidge with musicians from all over the world. It was in these jam sessions that the concept for Begena Fusion was born. The aim, as always, was to broaden the reach of the begena and introduce these venerable songs and sounds to a wider audience. The result is this CD. Enjoy.

Good Introduction to Ethiopian Music Culutre For Every Listener
This album is an opening for me - I never before listened to the Ethiopean music and this record caught me at last.
Temesgen plays traditional Ethiopian lyre - begen, but here the sounds of lyre are installed into context of new music to which our Western ears more adjusted - so you could listen to Ethiopean songs and in the same time there are familiar for the listener elememts of jazz and even pop music in Temesgen's songs. So it's like travel in the new land with familiar guide. Temesgen uses elements of Western music quite carefully and nearly minimalistic. The music mainly is quite slow and relaxing. You could listen to it many times. Thank you, Temesgen!
