Dick Noel and Others
Dick Noel was one of the top studio trombone players at the time of this recording. He put together some of his favorite musicians to make this album. This was not a big money venture. He wanted to make some good music and have fun! I worked with Dick as a player quite often but I was surprised when he asked me to write these charts. I think I suggested a lot of these songs that I arranged also. So why the Kazoos? All I can say is that Dick, Billy Byers, Milt Bernhart and the others all had a great sense of humor and they were having fun! Love em or hate em! I think the Kazoos are funny. All the horns on here except Bud Shank were trombones. Byers wrote one chart “Alright-Okay-You Win” where they recorded the trombones at half speed and played them back at normal speed [I think] so they sound like trumpets! I was reminded about this album by a friend of mine recently and I decided it should be re-issued. Good music played by great LA musicians! The sound of the trombones is excellent! Dick Noel was a top notch player and a terrific guy. Take a listen to his beautiful ballad playing on “Dindi” and “Something In Your Smile”. Very warm and soulful. This CD in his memory will keep this music alive for future generations. Mike Barone
