While travelling through Canada a few years ago, singer-songwriter Craig Banks found an unusual wood carving in the dusty corner of a quirky art store – a black bear. “There was something about it. It’s hard to explain. It was as if that bear had a story to tell, and somehow I was the one to tell it,” he recalls. “I started to have strange dreams after that. I heard music in those dreams and knew I needed to create those sounds.” Some time after, once back on home soil, Banks formed a new outfit with three like-minded musicians – and The Black Bear Band was born.
Four men whose influences include an eclectic mix of retro Rockabilly, Americana, New Wave, a shot of Soul and a pinch of Folk , Black Bear Band is Craig Banks (vocals), Benjamin Peacefull (Guitars and Bass), David Goldberg (Keyboards) and Damian Staz (Drums). Together they create music grounded in the dust and rust of people's lives and histories. Black Bear Band make music to move people.
Banks is a classically trained vocalist, while Peacefull was born into a family of travelling musicians and grew up on the road. Old friends and colleagues, their partnership in Black Bear was a natural evolution. Keyboard player David Goldberg is ‘the fuse that ignited the fire’ lit by the light of the legendary Damian Staz on drums.
