ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Album Notes
One day the question was posed by Peter Conolly (yours truly) whether anyone had ever bothered to make a recording of this traditional epic-length charter-bus blight and minimalist musical landmark. It was suggested by one Betsy Lenora that perhaps this could be done with each "verse" performed in a different musical style. The idea spread like a holiday flu amongst a select group of musicians and parodists in and around the musical hotbed (mud optional) of San Jose, California, first with 14 or so tracks recorded at Topher Gayle's "Briarwood West" home studio, and after that in a Tuff Shed in the backyard of Craig "Two Sheds" Sutherland (the other shed containing actual shed stuff) directly under the approach path of the San Jose airport. Now Topher and Peter had met in high school and along with a third friend, Nat Goodspeed, who also turns up on this album, formed the seminal unknown way-below-cult bands Far Frummet and Famous Last Words (basically Far Frummet with drums other than a cardboard box) in the greater (and also lesser) New England area during the 1970s and 80s. Those folks have continued to work on composing and recording music and original songs in all kinds of genres with the goals of wide musical exploration and genre abuse. Topher has been a member of the sadly defunct groups Briarwood (along with Craig, and Chris Finn who also appears here) and Coyote Blue (which also featured our guest violinist Pete Chen) as well as current outfits such as the Twisted Trio and a contra dance band, and is a luthier and the inventor of the Mandonator (check out his website!). The "concept" for the sprawling, 2-disc concept album was that a charter bus driver, bedeviled by the unrelenting chorusing from the back of the bus, lunges for the safety of his radio, but can find nothing but variations on the theme of bottles being taken down, passed around, or simply falling off the wall (I believe this is the 'clean' family version of the refrain), or perhaps just being whisked into another dimension entirely. Soon, venerated singers, girl groups, surf bands, polka bands, wedding bands, new wavers, operetta devotees, heavy metallurgists, harmonizers, carolers, prog-rockers, Georgia chain gangs, singing Belgian triplets and (for some reason) a couple of film directors have weighed in on the subject matter. Joni sits in a Montreal cafe pondering the relation of walled bottles of beer to modern romance, some cloistered monks wail away in the bleak days before Gregorian Chant finally found its groove, Rat Packers snap their fingers and a Brooklyn kid explores the sensuous rhythms of the third world. This album will make a wonderful gift for the music obsessive, Weird Al or Dr. Demento fan, or lover of unique and handcrafted works of outsider art in your circle. It may be 90 minutes of your life that you can never get back, but it is also 90 minutes that you can re-live over and over at your convenience, and it contains no high-fructose corn syrup! If you have half as much fun listening to this album as we have had making it, then we will have had twice as much fun as you! Hope you enjoy! -- Peter Conolly, Alameda, California, December, 2012.
