The Cold and Lovely are going to blow up. Not a matter of if, but only a matter
The Cold and Lovely's eponymous debut record is truly a gem.
The project has been a work-in-process for singer/ songwriter/ multi-instrumentalist/ producer Meghan Toohey for many years, and after all the hard work, she has delivered a tight record with achingly beautiful lyrics, driving melodies, ornate arrangements, and dreamy production. With Nicole Fiorentino (Smashing Pumpkins, Veruca Salt, Spinnerette, Radio Vago, Light FM) handling bass duties and Patty Schemel (Hole, Imperial Teen, Hit So Hard) behind the drum kit, the trio has put together a record that should be in every music fan's digital library.
Meghan's soft and delicate vocal, juxtaposed with her unabashedly honest lyrical prose, is one aspect of the record that clearly stands out in my mind. Underneath the dream-pop production elements, the infectious melodies showcase Meghan's pop sensibility and song-writing talent. After one listen, it'll be a challenge not to hit "Repeat". My play count is evidence of this.
The Cold and Lovely are going to blow up. Not a matter of if, but only a matter of when.
Heavy Rotation: "Your Black Heart", "Mad Man's Dreams", "Teeth"
"It's so fake here, and everybody acts the same. I could die here with no one even asking my name." - Teeth
"One more word from your mouth - bitter, shallow
You cut me down to the bone and suck the marrow
Is it hard to leave me alone?
It's a scratch you can't itch
Is this really how you want to live?
In a glass house..."
- Your Black Heart
