Unleashed

by The Hound Kings

This acclaimed recording of acoustic blues and genre bending tunes melds tradition with contemporary themes in a stripped down setting, transcending the simple format to deliver a set that is at once rockin', melancholy and humorous and altogether "real".

ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Album Notes
A New Release From 9 Below Productions
With their debut release UNLEASHED, the Hound Kings are positioned to become a favorite among enthusiasts of acoustic blues music. Although reminiscent of classic country blues, this CD displays something new and fresh on the acoustic blues scene. Of the 10 tracks, 8 are original compositions penned by the Hound Kings. Alabama Mike has a knack for writing lyrics in a classic blues style with subject matter pertinent to today’s world. The talents of guitarist Anthony Paule, and Scot Brenton on the harmonica, bring these lyrics to life. The results are the original tunes you hear on UNLEASHED.
About the 2 cover tunes on this CD…Red Light is an obscure tune written by California blues man, Mercy Dee Walton. The humorous, suggestive lyrics are reminiscent of tunes like Chick Willis’ Stoop Down Mama. The Hound Kings take this piano boogie and turn it into a rompin’ stompin’ guitar and harmonica driven groove. You Gotta Move is the Fred McDowell and Reverend Gary Davis classic. In this recording, the Hound Kings give the gospel tinged tune a new acoustic arrangement with an infectious shuffle groove.
If the names Alabama Mike, Scot Brenton, and Anthony Paule sound familiar to you, perhaps it’s because they worked together on previous releases Day To Day and Tailor Made. Both releases were favorites among fans and critics alike.
UNLEASHED is receiving a major press, radio, and online publicity campaign, both in the U.S. and internationally.

Coungry Blues for the 21st Centiory
The Hound Kings' debut album, Unleashed, has one foot firmly planted in the realm of rural blues while the other pivots the acoustic trio into a more modern sensibility that deals with 21st century economic realities. "SSI Blues", the opening track, perfectly exemplifies this. Vocalist Alabama Mike wryly comments on current hard times while Anthony Paule on guitar and harp man Scot Benton lay down country-style blues as old as the genre itself. Part lament and part celebration of our social safety net, it's enough to set a Tea Party fan to ranting.

A standout track with a more modern bent is "The Thang". Built around a soul song structure, it's the story of a guy in a downward spiral, caught in the clutches of a working girl. Similarly, You Got Issues departs from the 12-bar structure as Alabama Mike itemizes his woman's bad relationship habits. With their spirited reading of the Mississippi Fred McDowell chestnut, "You Gotta Move" (the CD's only cover tune) the Hound Kings return to their country-blues home base.

Alabama Mike possesses a high, keening voice that suggests plenty of living, both in tribulation and celebration. His backing duo are sure-footed. Paule provides driving rhythms and supportive melodic accompaniment that never crowd the singer. Benton's harp is consistently tasteful, concisely commenting on the vocals. Collectively, the trio has come up with nine original songs that mourn the hard times and commemorate the good ones—a bittersweet mix that should delight the acoustic blues fan.
