ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Album Notes
This CD title gets its name from the spontaneous shout, “Oh, play that thing!” in Joe “King” Oliver’s 1923 recording of Dippermouth Blues, a selection on this CD. In addition to King Oliver’s music, we play tunes affiliated with and composed by Louis Armstrong, Sidney Bechet, Edward “Kid” Ory, Jelly Roll Morton, and Duke Ellington. The CD opens with Ory’s Muskrat Ramble with modern lyrics sung by Daniel Henderson and closes with Bechet’s sentimental ballad, Si to vois ma mere, a song featured in Woody Allen’s film, Midnight in Paris.

Our band name refers to the Hot Five, Louis Armstrong’s recording group of the 1920’s. When well-known French trumpeter sat in with the NH5 in Villard de Lans, he commented: “The New Hot 5? Don’t you think that is a rather ambitious name for a band?” Indeed, it is!
