ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Album Notes
John P. Kelly was born in Sligo, Ireland. John loved the Irish music and played it from when he was a child. He was open and giving to anyone who wanted to learn our tradition. He led the music for the Philadelphia Ceili Group’s Friday night ceilis from the mid 70’s until 1990 when he died. John’s music and his gift for passing it on is truly one of the foundations of Philadelphia’s Irish music tradition. Kitty Kelly continues his open spirited aural tradition at The John Kelly Session of The Philadelphia Ceili Group's annual Irish Festival as well as other venues here and in Ireland. Tom Kelly, from Tyrone, on accordion, is the senior traditionalist on this recording. Tomas Cahill learned from the great Philadelphia flute player Eddie Cahill. He and Kitty's cousin Danny Flynn (accordion), Chris Carpenter (banjo) played with Kitty and John for the Friday night ceilis at Irish Center. Starting in the 70's, Eddie Clark (bodhran) initiated sessions all over the city of Philadelphia, telling the history of Ireland in story and song. Marian (fiddle) and Tom Gittleman (bouzouki) are well respected session musician anchors who also played with John Kelly. Marian now teaches Irish fiddle. Mike Albrecht (guitar and bodhran) came to the Irish music through his wife Kitty Kelly. Paraic Keane (fiddle) is the son of Sean Keane of The Chieftains. He was welcomed to the Philadelphia Band through his musical friendship with Kitty, MIke and Eddie Clark.
