ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Album Notes
WPGU-FM's Surfabilly Freakout Radio and Interstellar Espionage, Inc. proudly announce the release of "Throttlebilly Beach Riot," a raucous, sand-spinning compilation of surf rock, garage and rockabilly/psychobilly. The high-energy CD features 19 bands that send the beach blankets flying as they race hot rods right through your clambake!

"Throttlebilly Beach Riot!" is a compilation of the music regularly featured on the Surfabilly Freakout radio show which originally hit the airwaves in May of 2006 on WPGU 107.1-FM in Champaign-Urbana, IL. The show features surf, garage, psychobilly, rockabilly and spaghetti western music performed (mostly) by modern bands. The featured bands play a heavier style of the music originally popular in the 1950's and 60's which evokes images of hot rods, drag races, crashing waves and classic B-horror and sci-fi films.

The CD includes songs by The Cocktail Preachers, The Madeira, The Koffin Kats, The Brains, The Love Me Nots, The Nebulas, The Creepy Creeps, Daikaiju, The Krank Daddies, Go! Tsunami, The Phantom Jets, The Phenomenauts, Knuckel Drager, The Mutants, The Men from S.P.E.C.T.R.E., 9th Wave, The Coffin Daggers, The Heavies and Vegas 66! The CD was produced by Jet Sterling of Interstellar Espionage, Inc. and mastered by Count at Vertebrae Productions (San Francisco). The CD artwork features illustrations by Lee Barber and graphic layout by Dean Schwenk of Dean's Graphics.

More about the show...
Surfabilly Freakout Radio is definitely about the music, but it became apparent early on that there would be a little more. "Freakout Studios" (WPGU-FM) has six microphones and the original DJs (Jet Sterling and Reverend Chuck Allen) were soon joined by a large cast of characters. Today there is rarely a show when all six aren't in use (and often there are more DJs than mics) for dialogue between the songs affectionately known as "jackassery, tom foolery and damn fool boobery." The DJ crew, which grew early-on to include Chelsea Bandita, Koffin Keith, Motorhead Mike and the Director of Awesome, expanded into booking and promoting live shows in Champaign-Urbana. Local gigs led to remote DJ/MC gigs as well as helping organize and promote surf, Tiki and hot rod events throughout the Midwest and on the East Coast. The DJ crew has had the pleasure of working with many of the bands that appear on "Throttlebilly Beach Riot!"

Surfabilly Freakout Radio airs Thursday nights from 9-10pm (central) on WPGU 107.1-FM in Champaign-Urbana and also streams live on the show's website.

A great CD that has the same live enrgy as the broadcast
Surfabilly Freakout is a marvelous and fresh approach to a radio broadcast. Put 6-8 crazies in a room and let them all talk at once. Surprisingly it is this chaos that creates the structure and bones for a great experience. Add the great choices of surf, garage and punk music to the mix and voila you have ThrottleBilly Beach Riot. This Cd is the only thing that gets me through the week. The radio broadcast is streamed but not archived so a lover of S.F. has to make due in between the shows on Thursday evenings. You can get the flavor of the show by listening to the Sign On/Sign Off cuts with the whole crew and their raucous commentary. Jet does a great job of keeping them on task...party! He and the rest of the bunch did a killer job of choosing awesome surf from their region and all over the surf horizon. You will recognize some of the giants in the genre; The Madeira are one of the best. But some of the lesser known bands provide touches of genius on this disc. The Coffin Daggers provide a great Ghoul Surf tune with Dr. Guillotine and The Mutants close with the dynamite Agents of the Universe. The land surfers at Surfabilly Freakout have great taste in music and put some heir best on this disc. You too can riot in your home, car, or even better at work. I cause a riot everyday by cranking The Krank Daddies for the work peeps. Support this great radio show and the crazies that work hard to bring surf music to the land locked masses every week. Pick up a copy or two of ThrottleBilly Beach Riot.
