Album Notes
This album is a rich introduction to the uniquely integrated world of the Classical/Brazilian fusion artist, Tiberio Nascimento. Not only is he an innovative composer and arranger, he happens to be an outstanding classical guitarist and improvisational flutist, trumpet player and singer. He is a one-of-a-kind Brazilian mouth percussionist whose vocal range spans four octaves.

As a jazz player, Tiberio has recorded with Paquito D'Rivera, K.D. Lang, and David Byrne. He has performed with classical artists such as Paula Robison and Tomoko Masur (wife of Kurt Masur). He is featured on the Oscar-nominated soundtrack for the film, "Bagdad Cafe."

As a classical guitarist, Tiberio has given recitals throughout the United States and Canada, and in major concert halls in Austria, England, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, and Switzerland. He has had the distinct privilege of playing privately for Andres Segovia and Baden Powell.

Tiberio attended New York's High School of Music and Art and graduated from Columbia University with a degree in both psychology and music. His earliest musical mentors and inspirations are his father, Joao, and his mother, Nancy.

Still Wonderful
I'm still amazed that his treatment of the two Villa Lobos Bachianas is not heralded by both classical and jazz music critics alike. His treatment of the Little Train of the Caipira makes the train come to life through his beautiful guitar playing, and his vocals on top are suprising and just perfect. I heard Bachianas Brasileiras No. 5 with Victoria de Los Angeles as the soprano, backed by eight celli; this is how it was written, and it was interesting if a little overwrought. Tiberios's version is beautiful and haunting--truly original. During his career he also championed the work of original composers for the guitar like John Pearce and Jeff Raheb. The other pieces on this album show his understanding of the deep connections between Bach and Brazilian folkloric rhythmic traditions. Put this album on late in the evening, alone or with a friend and you'll be pleased.

Living Music
You have to listen to this! Tiberio gives life to the music. I have to imagine that the composer, whatever the genre, would appreciate Tiberio's treatment of their music. Tender, graceful, energetic, evocative, whatever is called for, he awakens it, and in the listener, the sensation lingers.

I knew him way back when...
Even back at Columbia U, whenever Tiberio played, he cast a spell so that no one could just walk by. By the end of a piece, he had always gathered a small crowd of people around.
This album is fantastic! It brings me back to those days on South Field, but encapsulates and summarizes the wisdom that Tiberio has accumulated in the time that has passed

Surpassing Bossa & Classical
Mr. Nascimento's intelligent exuberance shines through in every note of this compelling recording. Working within already circumscribed territories, he finds a way to bring renewed freshness in the expression of a unique and individual character - perfectly reflecting the multicultural influences of New York City and Brazil, and the concert halls of Europe's greatest exponents. A wonderful blending of reassurance and surprise! Delightful.
