Ciaccona

by Timothy Burris

Passacaglias and ciaconnas are fascinating forms, inexorably advancing 'musical machines. This recording offers seven ciaconnas and two passacaglias, including works by Weiss, Visée, and my transcription for baroque lute of J.S. Bach's violin Ciaccona.
Genre: Classical: Bach

ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Album Notes
Timothy Burris has performed throughout Europe and the US, both as a soloist and an accompanist. He has appeared in concert with such esteemed artists as the mezzo-soprano Jennifer Lane and the keyboardist Robert Hill, as well as under the baton of Peter Schreier and René Clemencic, among others. His solo playing has been called “sensitive and impressive” (The Virginia Gazette), displaying “distinguished musicality and a depth of artistry” (La Semaine d’Anvers), and “whet[ting] the appetite for more” (Fanfare). The Lute Society Magazine said of his skills as an accompanist: “Burris … plays with beautiful tone and is an absolutely first-class accompanist.”
He has recorded with such prominent early music vocalists as Jennifer Lane, Tamara Matthews, and Willeke te Brummelstroete. As the ensemble Music's Quill, he and tenor Timothy Neill Johnson produced the first complete recording of the songs of Philip Rosseter, lutenist to King James I. Ciaccona is his ninth recording.

He is a founding member of the ensemble Ensalada, with violinist Lydia Forbes and 'cellist Myles Jordan, and holds a soloist's diploma from The Hague's Royal Conservatory and a PhD from Duke University. Mr Burris has taught master classes and lectured on lute practice at universities and conservatories throughout Europe and the US. His broadcast credits include a four-installment series on lute he wrote for Dutch radio. He taught lute for six years at the Royal Flemish Conservatory in Antwerp, and currently teaches at Colby College and the Portland Conservatory of Music (Maine).
