ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Album Notes
The Moscow Coup Attempt is the music and film endeavor of Los Angeles based producer, composer, and covert operative of disenchantment, Derek Whitacre.

The 2005 album "The Failure of Shortwave Radio" was the first release from TMCA. The album is a stream of unconscious interpretation of failures in communication of not just nations, but persons. A grand scale assessment of individuals.
The artistic base of influence for the album lies in "Numbers Stations” and their influence on world politics, the cold war, espionage, and musical themes. Many of the motives of "The Failure..." are derived from the musical interludes of these Numbers Stations. "The Failure of Shortwave Radio" attempts to capture the creepy and mysterious essence of Numbers Stations as a broader outlook on humanity and breakdowns in communication wrapped up in the music. What appears on the surface to be an ambient electronic adventure turns into the soundtrack of a film. The purpose is to wrap the listener in an environment that is comfortable, yet unnerving... like a good suspense-thriller.

**A brief lesson about Numbers Stations:
Numbers Stations, also known as Spy Numbers Stations, are mysterious shortwave radio broadcasts of unknown, and unacknowledged origin. They can be found on random shortwave radio frequencies around the world, at any time of the day. Most stations consist of some kind of monophonic musical call sign, followed by sampled voices (often female) reciting repeated number sequences for an hour, or sometimes days. Some use alpha numerics ("Yankee, Hotel, Bravo"), some use languages other than English. But all remain a mystery. It is suspected that these stations have a role in international espionage, and are used to communicate instructions to spies in the field. They started to appear in the early years of the Cold War, and can still be heard today.

...his orchestrations build a subtle musical structure full of tension and patho
Is strange how The Moscow Coup Attempt music recalled me a sort of electronic / orchestral version of the last Slint record but Derek's capacity of writing tracks that are always in balance between the song structure and the soundtrack composition made me thought about Slint's way of building guitar layers. Derek doesn't use guitars but his orchestrations build a subtle musical structure full of tension and pathos. The pizzicato violin parts seems joyful but if you mix them with the viola and the syncopate tempos of the acoustic drums the effect changes radically. The ten tracks are beautifully recorded and even if they are full of melodies, the effect is also similar to the one created by the guitar suites of the Glenn Branca orchestra where the dissonant melodies form a complex web of sounds. THE FAILURE OF SHORTWAVE RADIO is an album that convinced me immediately and for sure it will satisfy a wide audience because of its different influences of ambient, acoustic and electronic sounds.

One listen to The Moscow Coup Attempt folds the listener into a world of “eyelid
Derek Whitacre is the architect of The Moscow Coup Attempt and the delightfully cryptic new cd The Failure of Shortwave Radio which incorporates and weaves samples of shortwave numbers stations throughout blissful washes of melody. The title is somewhat poignant for me as a shortwave radio listener who has witnessed the landslide of shortwave stations discontinuing their broadcasts to North America over the past five years including the BBC, and RVI from Flanders.

Brilliant
Very powerful music; it's easy to get sucked in to Derek's dark and terrifying world. Makers of monochromatic art films depicting the horrific realities of this world would be well advised to seek sync licensing from Derek. Close your eyes and take a listen.

Deep and powerful bass lines meet atmospheric string arrangements to produce an electronic album which bears up to repeated listening. For fans of Boards Of Canada and DJ's Shadow and Krush but also 'post rock' bands such as Mogwai and Godspeed! You Black Emperor. Highly recommended. Hopefully the live experience will find it's way over to Scotland....

very new and refreshing
The Failure of Shortwave Radio is a very spooky look into the sadowy world of numbers stations and the like.........incomplete musical sentences, actual numbers stations recordings in the background of the songs, backwards cymbal hits, and intreging drum fills make you feel paraniod and like your in an old school spy movie..........GOOD BUY!

Antonio

brilliant.
Some of the most unique and vividly profound music I've ever heard.
