ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Album Notes
What does Downbeat Magazine's top Trumpeter say about Tokeli? "I love to hear a great singer - especially one with style, control, pitch and a wonderful sense of rhythm. Tokeli is one of those rare talents - she has it all, plus beauty. I love her sound. She is destined to become a major star." Gilbert Castellanos

"Tinged with Latin and African influences, 'Where Do You Start?' is among the year's spiciest jazz releases, a record that consistently surprises and mesmerizes from beginning to end." ALL ABOUT JAZZ

"Tokeli is at her best, letting her voice paint pictures with the words, as her band performs with unrestrained enthusiasm behind her." CDREVIEWS.COM

"Tokeli's rainy day romanticism is moving and utterly spellbinding." WHISPERINANDHOLLERIN.COM - UK

"Tokeli has a unique name and along with that comes a uniqueness in her music. She sings with wonderful spirit and comes up with new and interesting views on jazz classics. With her band of young inspired musicians together they embrace creativity and it’s a joy to be along for the listen." Peter Sprague

"Her voice is velvet, her interpretations, maverick -- she's a composer's dream come true. Her bittersweet rendition of "I'm So Relieved" will give you reason to hope, and her vocal styling on "Someday" is like listening to a soft summer breeze. This may be Tokeli's first CD, but it is definitely not her last." Lori Tritel

"...a gifted voice" Smother Magazine

"The first time you hear Tokeli sing, within seconds you realize you are somewhere rare and marvelous. Cocooned in her captivating warmth, cradled in her lithe lyricism, you are helplessly, willingly swept away on her magic cloud, spellbound in this moment she is conjuring just for
you. What kind of sorcery is this? Who knows or cares?" Carl Hammond

Be transported someplace marvelous...

wonderful album, great work
This is a beautiful collection of jazz tunes, very well done by Tokeli and her band. I found it a perfect blend of the innovative and interesting, but still in keeping with more traditional jazz styles. Wonderful album, Tokeli, can't wait to hear more from you!

The Genesis Of A Songbird
Years ago there was a rock & roll band called Deuce Coupe with a vocalist named Tokeli. It was obvious she was immensly talented and miscast. Fast forward to 2007 ... This woman has style, a magnetism that captivates everyone she touches with her voice and her music. She is a MUST SEE. WHERE DO YOU START is a MUST HAVE. So get it. Love, John :-)

Fearless, open, accomplished, and a whole lot of fun
A fresh take on old songs, an overdue intro to future standards, plus Kurt Weill, with mandolin and harp! Tokeli and her crew are fearless, open, accomplished, and a whole lot of fun to be around. The arrangements, the players, and especially the voice--they work happily together, and they make us smile.

Haunting & Beautiful Voice
Overall very nicely performed numbers."There Are Clouds" is a haunting song and beautifully done.Trumpet was excellent on this number!Where Do You Start?-I love this number-a nice quiet arrangement. The tango number,Youkali Tango, had a great blend of the various instruments.

Yessssss!
Remember when you were on that third date with the Kappa that for some reason found you “incredibly adorable?” You even ignored your Red Lobster coupons and took her to Giorgio’s. And remember when you got back to your place and she went to the bathroom and you rifled through your CD collection for just the right music? ... Grover Washington, Jr?...no. Diana Krall?...no. ...Earl Klugh?...no. ... Tokeli…yesssss!

Indelible
When rumours were circulating about this album coming out, I was ecstatic about finally being able to listen to the wonderful harmonies, and a voice as crystal clear and pristine as ice on a winter morning, in my own house, by my fireplace, reminiscing. It is pleasing that a new singer has approached this fine repertoire with so much vigour, successfully meeting the challenge to set herself apart from others, through the unique style of her sensuous voice and emotional delivery.

Being a musician and a romantic epicure myself, I can sense the desire of both singer and instrumentalists to create a fabulous first album. First in many ways – unique, special, indelible.
