Dizzy

Tom Hall, from Northampton with love
Ask someone about Northampton and they might mention Carlsberg, Cobblers FC or maybe the distinguished graphic novelist Alan Moore. Less well know is that among the back streets, pubs and old shoe factories lies a vibrant music scene waiting to be discovered.

No-one represents this better than the late Tom Hall, one of Northampton's most gifted and prolific musicians. The album features interpretations of his work by artists from around the world, including Alabama 3's Reverend D.Wayne Love, Mark Griffiths of The Shadows, and our very own Alan Moore. A great friend of Tom's, Mr Moore's reading of 'Moses For Christmas' is unforgettable, a raucous gem as shimmering and joyous as anything Joyce ever wrote.

But it's music that's at the heart of the album. 26 songs, all killer no filler. 'The First Day of May' with its heartrending vocal from Tom's widow Di, Mark Griffiths on guitar. The Reverend D.Wayne Love with 'Dead Man's Drums' and a startlingly germanic version of 'Take Me Back To Berlin'. It's about diverse artists drawn together by Tom's word and music - Alaric Neville was so inspired he brewed up not only an album track but a commemorative beer! It's something the listener is part of too, a community. And local bands come right to the fore, Cousin Avi's 'Andalusian Waltz' and 'Archangels' by Real Live Owls among the highlights. Beautiful epic tales of love and loss, I defy you not to shed a tear.

And just so much great music, Allison Labs' spine tingling 'Wind Song' contrasting with Eaglehead's Tom Waits-ian roar on 'Living My Life By Fiction', or the twinkle in the eye that is 'Any Palomino Is A Pal Of Mine'. Guy Fletcher whips 'Looking For A Vision' into something The Levellers could only dream of, playing every instrument on the track with a 'Day In The Life' style wall of sound thrown in for good measure. And though diverse there's a strong blues sensibility binding it all together, perhaps nowhere more so than in Susana Figueira's superb vocals, a rare recording of a rare talent.

Brilliant beautiful and life enhancing.. you should definitely treat yourself to Tom Hall
