ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Album Notes
In their twelve years together, Tonic Sol-fa has established itself not only as the most in-demand vocal group in the Midwest, but also as one of the most successful independent acts in America. In addition to substantial CD sales of its own independent releases (1,000,000 copies sold and counting), the group has toured extensively throughout the US and abroad, building their financial base with a steady list of festivals and private shows that eventually led to sold-out tours of theaters and small arenas.

Tonic Sol-fa began at St. John’s University with Mark McGowan, who sings baritone, and lead vocalist Shaun Johnson, while both were attending in the mid 1990s. Shortly after forming, the two auditioned for a local entertainment agency which helped jump-start the group’s performance and appearance schedule. Tenor, Greg Bannwarth, and bass, Jared Dove, joined soon after, completing the group. Together the quartet reached national prominence with appearances on NBC’s Today Show and in Newsweek magazine. They shared the stage with a number of recognizable performers including Jay Leno, Jeff Foxworthy and Lonestar, among others, and were recently part of Garrison Keillor’s 30th anniversary celebration of A Prairie Home Companion.

From the group’s onset, the four members of Tonic Sol-fa, with a small team of driven supporters, have overseen and operated the business of Tonic Sol-fa, growing a small business of a few thousand dollars into what is today a multi-million dollar limited liability company. The group had to overcome a number of obstacles, including an unspoken apprehension to a cappella acts by individuals in the music industry and having a name that was anything but catchy (a system of naming the notes of the scale, usually do, re, mi, fa, sol, la, ti, developed to teach singing). Still, the group persevered, recording and manufacturing its own records and selling them to a growing legion of fans via the Internet, in the lobby of the theaters where they performed, and through a growing national distribution. One could say they gained their current consumer popularity the old fashioned way; they earned it.

At present, Tonic Sol-fa just released their sixth album, entitled “On Top of the World” on the heels of their previous projects (Christmas [DVD], Boston to Beijing, By Request, Red Vinyl, Sugarue, Front Row [video], and Style,). The recordings contain only four indelible voices and occasional percussion. This outstanding blend has resulted in multiple Contemporary Acappella Recording Awards, NACA entertainer of the year nominations, considerable national press, and has landed their music on the best-selling seasonal DVD at Wal-Mart, The 12 Dogs of Christmas.

Further, Tonic Sol-fa released their first television holiday special in 2007, which aired over 1800 times in forty-seven states and Canada. The television special will be shown through 2010, and in 2008 will be distributed worldwide, continuing to spread their unique sound to an ever-increasing following.

Tonic Sol-fa continues to tour, record, and conscientiously run their business in the only way familiar to them –differently.

Experience of a Lifetime!
This is a great insight and introduction to Tonic Sol-fa. It features many Christian holiday tunes done in the unique a cappella flavor that is Tonic Sol-fa, some secualr favorites from their Boston to Beijing and By Request CD's, as well as small interview segments that shows thier personalities. This concert is a landmark for Tonic Sol-fa, in that it brought the group to the national stage with it being aired on PBS stations nationwide and in in Cananda.

A Tonic Sol-fa show is like a rock concert, music lesson, improve show, and stand up comedy routine all rolled into one. This is a definite can't miss!

A MUST HAVE for any DVD collection!!
Tonic Sol-Fa's christmas DVD is one of the best DVD's that I own. Performing classics like,'Joy to the World','Nuttin' For Christmas', 'King of Glory', 'Santa Bring My Baby to Me', and 'God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen' (just to name a few) you won't believe your ears as to how great these songs are with a little bit of TSF flare! This is a great dvd that you won't be able to stop listening to once you hear them sing! You won't be disappointed!

Perfect harmony speaks for itself!
There are a few Christmas must-haves and this DVD is one of them. For those of you who missed their PBS performance over the holidays, you are in luck. Tonic Sol-Fa Christmas is not just an A capella performance, it is an A capella experience. The song selection consists of both sacred and secular Christmas arrangements; some familiar, and some not as familiar, but just as catchy. Although it is obvious that these guys exude natural talent, you cannot help but imagine the hours of work that went into the arrangements of their songs, and in getting the precision of their sound razor-sharp. The experience is electric and that enthusiasm is mirrored in the audience who not only sits in quiet appreciation listening to the more reflective selections such as "Chances" or "Silent Night", but they participate with unleashed Christmas spirit. The sound this group creates is best described as a Chord Catalyst that sparks emotion in the heart of the listener. The vocal talent of each member of Tonic Sol-Fa is polished, and always on key. They are not pitchy, like other groups; and the energy they have on stage is contagious. If you cannot break away to see them live in concert, this DVD is the next best thing. It is sure to be a Christmas favorite, time and time again.

Awesome versions of Christmas Classics!
Whether or not you have seen this group during their holiday tours, everybody will enjoy this DVD. Tonic Sol-Fa puts their own magnificent blend of vocal harmonies to some classic Christmas songs, as well as some they have written themselves. They do a great job of getting the crowd involved during Joy to the World. Live concert footage is really impressive, as well as the back-stage feel to some of the footage and interviews. You will understand why the group appeals to a broad spectrum of fans. Overall, if you enjoy music, you will enjoy this DVD.

Christmas in July
I purchased this DVD at a show I attended last year and immediately became obsessed. No matter what time of the year it is, this DVD is and will always be a great way to sit back, relax, and enjoy some awsome people singing awsome songs.
