ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Album Notes
Since its formation in 2005 Trio Subtonic has developed a style of original music that is defined by its compositional intrigue, groove heavy improvisations and its accessibility to listeners across the musical landscape. Choosing not to be boxed into any traditional genres, keyboardist Galen Clark, bassist Bill Athens and drummer Jesse Brooke continue their musical exploration with the release of their fourth, album Night Runners which delves into an uncompromising, darker and experimental soundscape that pushes the boundaries of their instrumentation.

The majority of the material on Night Runners was written by Galen Clark during a month long musical sabbatical in Europe in 2012. The idea behind the writing experience was full immersion, writing and practicing away from the normal distractions of teaching and touring. In addition to Clark’s 7 originals the album includes a track by bassist Bill Athens and a cover of Nick Drake's Way to Blue. The album demonstrates a shift away from the band's previous work, as they transition towards a more acoustic sound that focuses on composition, group chemistry and a rock aesthetic that aims to be both beautiful in its simplicity and powerful in its directness. The recording process was also more organic and spontaneous then in previous efforts, as the band recorded much of the material before ever playing it live. All 9 tracks were recorded at 25th St. Recording Studio in Oakland, California.
