Extend a Hand, is the third CD from UMOJA. Six different chorus members wrote works, twelve of the nineteen tracks are by the men of UMOJA.
They write and sing about their personal struggles to make sense of the world. They lyrics overflow with the revelation, empathy and an unbroken determination to make life better, to connect to the outside world and search deep inside for meaning. The essence of hope, prayer, love of God, love our natural world and a deep spirituality that transcends their world inside the prison walls - all of this is here.
Most members of UMOJA have not been exposed to unaccompanied music, especially the unaccompanied African-American spiritual. Gospel, rhythm and blues, hip hop, pop and jazz are what is in their musical blood stream. World music is also new. Our aim in this album is to present the total mix music we've studied together over the last several years.
We offer this eclectic music recipe of love and hope to help heal an ailing world. All proceeds from sales of the CD will benefit local food banks in the counties of southwestern Ohio, with focus on Cincinnati, Dayton and Columbus. He us extend a hand through our music to make a difference.
