Hustlin' for a Gig

by Uptown Vocal Jazz Quartet

Their sound reminds the listener of such iconic vocal groups as Lambert/Hendricks/Ross and The Manhattan Transfer, but Uptown Vocal Jazz Quartet has put their own distinctive signature on 4-part harmony jazz vocals with this diverse package of new music, clever lyrics, and arrangements they wrote themselves… spanning vocalese, bop, big band swing, sentimental ballads, Chicago blues, cool jazz, driving samba, lilting bossa nova, Basie-style swing, lyricized scat, and even a warm dose of harmonized R&B.
Genre: Jazz: Jazz Vocals

It's Been A Looooooooonnnnnggggg Time!!!!!!!!!
After their ten-year hiatus, Uptown Vocal Jazz Quartet is back with their comeback album; "Hustlin' For A Gig." My favorite song for their comeback album is "Now I Have This." Welcome back, UVJQ!

AMAZING, wonderful fresh new SONGS!!
This group sings together BEAUTIFULLY but what really knocked me out about this CD is the SONGS! Fresh, sophisticated yet accessible, with SMART lyrics and interesting changes, melodies... As a songwriter myself, I'm STARVED to hear good new songs and this CD is a smorgasbord of truly GREAT songs that are fun to listen to.

HE WAS THE CAT, GONE GONE GONE and JAVA JUNKIE are super-hip - but the tenderness of I'LL REMEMBER WHY and A MILLION MILES capture real-life love perfectly! The one cover, THIS IS THE LIFE, while sonically fine is actually my least favorite track.

The vocal arrangements are top notch, with refreshing surprises and there's some nice blowing on many cuts, but oh, those SONGS are pure dynamite! It's a thrill just to know that so much genuine emotion and intelligent verbal brilliance is still happening today!
