Vermouth's debut cd, RetroFuture Pop Exotica, is the brainchild of Justine Kragen and Steve McDonald whose eclectic assortment of influences create bite-sized chunks of pop music that are both melodic and offbeat. Vermouth is a sneaky cocktail- RetroFuture Pop Exotica goes down easy but packs a punch.
Kragen and McDonald’s passion for diverse genres distinguishes Vermouth's unique vibe. Intricate vocal harmonies, atmospheric guitars, vibraphone, varied percussion, horns, bass, keyboards, and drums make up their colorful, lounge-y sound. Quirky and catchy, Vermouth's style encompasses elements of exotica, surf, gamelan, sixties pin-up glamour and b-movie soundtracks. With 12 tracks clocking in at just under 45 minutes, there is enough tremolo, space-age orchestration, coy vocals, bird calls and spy guitars to make Peter Gunn yell, “Taboo!”
RetroFuture Pop Exotica was produced and mixed by Steve McDonald and mastered by grammy-award winning Evren Göknar at Capitol Mastering. Additional recording by Giulio Carmassi (Truffle Sound Studio). Additional processing by Adam Berg (Manifest Music). Performers on the album are Justine Kragen, Steve McDonald, Matthew Embry, Curtis Cunningham, Giulio Carmassi, Dawn Fintor, Geoff Dent, Joshua Aguiar, Casey Butler, Matt Cooker and Rebecca Stout.
