ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Album Notes
Victoria Drake gives an emotionally satisfying performance in this world premiere, 2-CD set. Everything about this is special. No one has ever before recorded these complete works on the harp. Bach wrote the solo cello suites between 1717 and 1720. They were largely forgotten after his death until the thirteen-year-old Pablo Casals turned up an edition in a tiny music shop in Barcelona and began to learn them. Only fifty years later (1937-39) did he record them and make them famous again. Another forty years passed until the young harp student, Victoria Drake, went to study in France. Unsatisfied with the limited repertoire for her instrument, she undertook transcriptions of all the Bach cello suites for harp, and after another twenty-five years, she has recorded them. It has been a process with a history of almost three hundred years!

With the physical CD you'll receive detailed liner notes which include a pictorial timeline showing the history of the recording.

Recorded by Grammy Award-winning producer/engineer Adam Abeshouse. Mastered in HDCD.

"The suites are a revelation on the concert harp...a fascinating interpretation of one of music's great masterpieces. Excellent sonics, with or without a HDCD decoder." - John Sunier, Audiophile Audition

"The suites sound ravishing on the harp; the lingering resonance of the vibrating strings fills in the harmonies that are implied in the linear cello part, and adds an appealing richness. Drake has a broad expressive range and can play with gossamer delicacy or rhythmic vigor, according to the character of each movement. She has terrific technique and handles even the most rigorous demands with grace and assurance. Her playing is supple and flexible, with just enough fluidity, avoiding both rigidity and Romantic excess. The sound has a nice balance of brightness and warmth, with a good sense of presence." - Stephen Eddins, AllMusic

"Bach's Cello Suites can change character drastically, depending on which character takes up the bow.
They change even more drastically when they change instruments. Chords that are implicit on cello become explicit on the harp, which is to say that long, spinning tunes become rolling harmonies. What is spare and tragic on the cello becomes lush and delirious on the harp. Partisans of tragedy and cello might argue that the harp perverts the lofty message of this music, that the harp makes it too beautiful. But there's no arguing with the beauty heard [here]. To my ear, Drake revealed an unexpected facet of a multifaceted piece of music." – Tom Strini, Milwaukee Journal Sentinel

5.0 out of 5 stars Exceptional Music!!!, November 9, 2009
By Bach Lover (San Francisco)

New appreciation and understanding of Bach's "Cello Suites". This is what Bach had going in his mind when he wrote these 6 masterpieces. I have listened (and studied) the cello suites for 25 years on cello and guitar and now to hear them on harp is to hear them fresh and new.

5.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful Bach!, June 3, 2009
By George H. Bryan (Lynchburg, Virginia)
This review is from: Bach: Cello Suites, BWV 1007-1012 (Transcribed for Harp) (Audio CD)
Victoria Drake, always a very sensitive musician, has given us a superb interpretation of Bach's "Cello Suites" played on a vintage harp. Her dynamic control is exceptional, and the ability of the harp to bring out the inner voices makes one wonder why these suites were not always played on a harp.

5.0 out of 5 stars Bach: Cello Suites, BMW 1007 - 1012 (Transcribed for Harp), August 4, 2008

This review is from: Bach: Cello Suites, BWV 1007-1012 (Transcribed for Harp) (Audio CD)
I have taken an interest in the Harp lately and I found this absolutely wonderful rendition of the Bach Cello Suites quite by accident. I love the Bach Cello Suites and I particularly like rendition of Misha Maisky in his younger years. This album by Victoria Drake shows her love not only of Bach, but her mastery of the Bach Cello Suites. I highly recommend it to anyone who loves the music of the harp and is a fan of J. S. Bach.

Victoria Drake's bold and visionary decision to adapt the glorious Bach cello suites for harp is as inspired as it is satisfying. What an amazing achievement. This is a deeply felt and deeply gratifying recording.

After purchasing Victoria Drake's "Bach:Cello Suites" and enjoying it tremendously, I have gone back to get three more for gifts. Bach and harp--it doesn't get any better than that!

5.0 out of 5 stars Once in a great while..., January 5, 2008
By Hagar Orren "Music Lover" (Berkeley, CA USA)
This review is from: Bach: Cello Suites, BWV 1007-1012 (Transcribed for Harp) (Audio CD)
Once in a great while an album comes along that I can't stop listening to. I
have turned so many friends onto this album. The music of Bach taken
together with the sound of the harp is magical and transformative. The harp
is the perfect accompaniment to my day, every day. I love this collection.
Also, it is 2 CDs worth of material, so it doesn't get repetitious. Victoria
Drake is an amazing artist worth checking out.
