The Magnificat (Song of Mary) [In Thai-Derm Looktung Style]

by Wanpen Jittrong

Here, the Song of Mary (Luke 1:46-55) is combined with traditional Thai folk-instrumentation and Thai-derm (classical music) to evoke the ‘humble, lowly, and meek’ - yet joyful theme contained in Mary’s Magnificat. Thai Ruk Tung (luktung) music, translated “child of the field” is a form of provincial folk music common to the Isaan region of Northeast Thailand. Ruk Tung’s expressive qualities are contained in vocal quavers known as ‘ruks’ or ‘children’ and expressed in the form of elongated or shortened vibratos and inflections.

ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Album Notes
Incorporating Thai royal-court classical music (Thai-derm) and folk music (luktung) with modern arrangements, we seek to create beautiful, rich, and diverse settings for the songs of Scripture to Thai music. HARK Music Publication’s mission is to create a culturally-rich and musically-meaningful setting for the psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs of Scripture in the music-language of the Thai people; that the Church in Thailand may have the words of Christ indwell them richly (Col. 3:16).
