Connect to real Blues
If you want the closest you can get to the real early blues, you\'ve found it. Enjoy. The recording is near perfect.

very dancable
I\'m a choreographer, and I\'m using cuts from this album to teach classes. We\'re making up cool, atmospheric partner dances to this stuff. It rocks, in a blues sort of way. John has some terrific phrasing, blending guitar and voice, reminding me of Joni Mitchell\'s artistry in this regard.

Top notch
I meant to give the top rating when I first reviewed this CD but I didn\'t know I could give more than 4 stars--so this update is my true rating. Brokedown Engine is my favorite track. If the blues were opera, this would be the virtuoso aria that leaves the audience breathless. Nimble and muscular 12-string accompaniment--an orchestra of one. I can listen to it over and over. I dance to it too!

An authentic gem
Dextrous guitar licks, soulful singing, lyrics poetic to saucy: the intimate feeling you're on the back porch listening to someone who lives and breathes the blues.

A bluesman with heart..
Waxwing John doesn't hold back when bringing you the blues. These songs and Wax's dextrous guitar playing will take you on a heartfelt journey through hard times and back. His first CD promises many more to come. When is the Charley Patton collection coming out?

I'm truly impressed with this album. I've been living in North Carolina for thirty years. We hear a lot of blues of the 'old timey' sort here. If I hadn't known that John is a contemporary of my own, I would have believed this album to be a collection from the very early days and the singer to be about 80 years old. Amazing.

Willie Brown's Liquor
The songs have an intriguing quality, somehow both gritty and sweet. I especially liked the "Sporting Life Blues."
