I cannot give you a picker’s critique, being basically a 1-4-5 player, but the subtleties in each song were not lost on me. Each time I heard Wayne I found more to enjoy. He is a gifted composer and player. What is important to me, however, is how he brings you into the music to the point where you just want stop what you are doing, listen and let it wash over you. Technical expertise is great; many a picker has that, but soul is something that can’t be taught.

Fretological Tour de force
For both those who missed Fretfull and especially those who know it, Riker's Fretology goes it one better. I'm on my 6th time thru and still not caring where on the floor of my car the travel case with my other CDs landed. Lovely chord melodies, intricate rhythms, even some Hedges-like bass lines, it's all here. Perhaps more than anyone this album may remind you of John Fahey, and yet it's different - it's really a unique approach to fingerpicked acoustic. I like the single-take approach that Wayne chose in recording this; that live feel really comes through (and with few if any mistakes that mortals could detect, who needs more takes?). Each tune is solid, but I might have opened the album with what to me is the strongest of all, which happens to be the title track. The closing harmonics are the perfect end to a flawless song. Rest Easy is another very accessible and beautiful piece.
All in all, another solid album from WR - if you love the acoustic steel-string guitar, you, too won't be looking for your other CDs anytime soon!
