“Djembe Dream” is the result of numerous requests over the years for a concrete example of Carl’s spiritual, inspirational, & uplifting style of hand drumming.
“I decided that recording an album of djembe music required authenticity. I figured on playing for a solid 45 minutes or so, & recording whatever happened,” says Carl.
What happened is purely inspirational. The CD was recorded direct to disc, with no overdubs, editing, or re-takes. The only effect is a touch of reverb. The dynamics are purely musical & not the fading of a volume control. Carl simply began to play, being inspired by evergreen trees, a river-stone path, a cat, & what he calls “spritely beings” who insisted on telling their story through rhythm. Carl was a rhythmic translator for the natural world around him.
The result is a stream-of-consciousness djembe solo that has undeniable logic & a truly spiritual feel.
“I am so grateful for the experience of that session,” he says. “I knew I was really not alone, & that I should focus on listening, not playing, what was coming through. It was an extraordinary session. I believe the CD captured the energy & the message.”
Recorded during Summer Solstice 2006.
Dedicated to the memory of Elsa Pye (1989-2006), a beautiful, loyal friend & example of higher love.
Carl Wergyn is a lifelong drummer, composer, & photographer who draws upon the spiritual in the mundane as the impetus for his work.
“There is so much music from one drum! This really shifts my energy & greatly improves the day. I’ll keep it in my car stereo!”
"It makes me feel like playing along, my whole body feels the rhythm and it makes me feel good. My mom said that she would like to take the cd player outside the next time we have a fire in our fire pit and listen while we watch the fire..."

“Deeply moving…are you sure there isn’t a keyboard? I heard so much more than just a drum…”
