The dualism between men and machine influences our lives at least since the first days of the industrialization. Between the beginning of industrial music and today elapsed nearly 40 years of development, experimentation and initiation. And there was always the question, who is acting and who is reacting: men or machine? This is exactly the point where the audience is put into the area of conflict of the german band X-Vivo. The new creation 'Out Of The Smell Of Decay' is a remix EP of the in 2009 released album 'EgoPhobia' and shows new facets of selected tracks of that album. Actual influences like Skrillex and Linkin Park are also a part like the industrial and alternative metal of the late 90s.
"Who am I?" could be the listeners question after the first title "Reflection RMX". Suspense-packed synthesizer sounds meet angry men- and gently female voices, poisonous guitars fight with pumping subbasses, grounded with massive beats. Despite the different influences of each band member, which are very distinctive here, there's still air to breathe.
Following is "Last Drop RMX", also a very forward pushing song. The beginning sounds as if someone is playing on different broken pieces of glass. Parallel massive guitars- and drum walls are arriving. Lyrically the song is about emotions as a motivation for our actions. Are you blinded by the negativity of the aggressor or are you looking through the rough shell? It's controlling you for a long time and now it's time to get away from it. As liberating as the text can be, it’s also the appearing breakdown part that puts you back onto the ground.
"EgoPhobia RMX" deals with the abyss of mankind and reinterprets the original lyrics in a complete new manner. A low spoken voice followed by stoner-industrial guitars and doom drums, tells you the alleged indifference of self-destruction, until a bright voice reveals the reality piece by piece. The song ends in a monotony of basses which herald the darker sides of the EP.
"Daymares RMX" wraps you in a cape of emptiness. Brute basses are pushing you in a corner of the room, their precision is breaking your will. That song shows how the band is capable to create an impressive atmosphere with just a few elements. At this juncture the chorus is the perfect addition, cause with all of their power the instrumentalists bring the song to a new level.
The fifth track "Realität RMX" starts with a fundament of grounded basses, while far away synthesizer pads converge with the last twitches of an old machine. An all-embracing darkness is crawling through a destroyed city right into your ears. The only thing that opposes are small pure points of light. A long forgotten audio tape screams its warning verse into the wind. But nobody except you can hear it, until everything goes by and you devote yourself to the relieving choir.
As a bonus X-Vivo puts a sixth track on the EP. "Irrtümer RMX" is created with the voice of the former singer Anna. The scene is a moment of relaxation that forces you to face your own questions and thoughts. Sounds blend with your environment to a big mass of vacuum. Despite desolation, a tired voice admonishes to decide between hope and disappointment. That track completely waive edgy guitars, only at the end they appear in a far away glint. Also the drums sound a little jazzy here.
All in all 'Out Of The Smell OF Decay' develops the question of emotion and reaction. And the conflict between men and machine is always present.
