Chanting CD Blends East Indian Sanskrit Mantras with Latin, Flamenco,
Creating Rhythmic "Latindian Mantra" World Music for All to Enjoy
Until recently, "Yogijohn" (John Tonin) was a man with two separate careers which were are also deep passions in his life. For the past 15 years, the Guelph, Ontario native has made a difference to many, as a well-respected certified Yoga instructor. But over the past 3 decades, to many more, he is known best as an acclaimed and highly versatile guitarist, mastering styles ranging from rock to new age, with a particular flair for flamenco music. His new CD: "Latindian Mantra Music" is a culmination of all of these years of honing his skills in both areas.
Thoughout his life, John has always embraced new interests with a healthy blend of perfectionism and playfulness. From childhood, he became hooked on the guitar and was already teaching by age 14. His love for the instrument has garnered him awards which include placing second in the Fender national guitar championship and holding the provincial title in 1989. With music partner Domenic Di Gravio, their 1991 album "Via Paradiso" reached #2 in the New Age charts. He is a long-time member of the highly successful "Lulu's Roadhouse Band", named for the famous nightclub which housed the world's two longest bars and up to 3000 people each night.
In 1987 he fulfilled the cherished dream of studying flamenco with noted teacher David Phillips. The same year, he also read Yogananda's "Autobiography of a Yogi", [which ignited a life-long commitment to Kriya Yoga meditation] and began practicing Hatha yoga. John then completed the Ananda Yoga Teachers Training in California and received his first certification in 1990. Ever since, he has been expanding his studies into a wide variety of yoga techniques and devotional chanting. In 2000, he received his second certification from the Federation of Ontario Yoga Teachers and also became an executive board member of the organization. At this time he began intensive study of the Sanskrit mantra.
Yoga and music had been two separate passions - until John began to 'hear' the mantras within the context of latin and flamenco rhythms which he also loved so much. He spent a year writing these uniquely-inspired songs, then, two more in the studio; recording almost all of the instrumentation himself. Finally, Guelph-based chanting friends Dennis Gomo, Heather Poole, Susan Sinclair-Wynn and his wife Melanie added their background vocals to complete the project. The recording process brought many moments of pure bliss which can truly be felt when listening to the recording. Yoga and chanting enthusiasts will find the rhythms and melodies irresistible - but more importantly, this fresh new style of music will bring listening joy to a far wider audience.
The first time I heard this CD by Yogijohn Tonin, I listened to it
over and over again, captivated by its deeply felt rhythms, heartfelt
chanting and lyrics, and tasteful musicianship of Yogijohn. I believe
this CD will become one of your favorites.
Healing Mantras, Shakti Mantras, Mantra Meditations and other works

I received your remarkable CD. Congratulations on doing such a fine musical with the Sanskrit Mantras.
We are very impressed with your work. It is my desire to broadcast some of the chants you did.
It will be so appropriate to record a chanting session.
