ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Album Notes
Zbonics is the fresh musical expression of Zak Najor, original drummer for the Greyboy Allstars. After many years in the making, this album catalogues the many different rhythmic, melodic, and harmonic influences Zak and co. have found inspiriation from. Co-written, recorded, produced and mixed by Brian Teel at 4 Track Mind Studios, this album was recorded with live instrumentation on organic instruments, authentic to the 70’s funk genre and true to its sound. No sampling or sequencing was used. Song topics range from life’s lessons to the frustration of relationships. One of the funkiest drummers on the west coast, Zak’s groove and feel do not disappoint. “More Beets” features performances by fellow Greyboy Allstars members Karl Denson (Vocals, Saxophone, Fender Rhodes), Chris Stillwell (Bass, Electric Guitar), and Robert Walter (Clavinet), as well as a host of other talented San Diego-based musicians.

About Zak Najor: Hailing from San Diego, CA, Zak started playing music in 1979. He began to develop his talent for drumming playing in school band from 5th grade throughout high school. Zak's first landmark gig was opening up for Kool and the Gang in a small local club, which ignited his desire to delve deep into funk and soul music. After a couple years of cutting his teeth on the local scene, Zak landed a job with a new band formed by D.J. Greyboy called The Greyboy Allstars. The 'Allstars' were an instant success, and toured extensively throughout the USA and Europe, and, in addition, performed the soundtrack to the movie Zero Effect featuring Bill Pullman and Ben Stiller. Subsequently, Zak played drums on the majority of (fellow ‘Allstars’ member) Karl Denson’s albums including his Blue Note release entitled “Dance Lesson #2”. Zak has shared the stage with many musical greats of our time, such as Fred Wesley(James Brown), Melvin Sparks, George Porter(The Meters), John Scofield, Les Claypool(Primus), Reuben Wilson, and many others.
Zak's latest endeavor is ZBONICS. It is a compilation of songs he wrote with long time friend Brian Teel over the last 13 years. He has also made his singing debut on the new ZBONICS record called 'More Beets'.
