Album Notes
New deep trance version and mixes of multi million selling Zodiaks theme from their all times best selling Latvian album ever- Disco alliance. Listen the new great mixes!

The music style named "Disco» has quickly become popular among the millions Soviet music fans and simple listeners of the big population. It was appeared in USSR in the middle 70-ies and was presented by the creativity of such widely known groups as ABBA, Boney M., Space, Arabesque, Village People, Eruption, Dschinghis Khan.
The numerous professional and amateurish vocal-instrumental bands were dominating on the native platform in those days. The musical compositions of foreign idols were willingly executing. Native ensembles were singing their songs in Russian. The VIA (vocal instrumental ensemble) format: percussions, a bass-guitar, some rhythm-guitars, a synthesizer - was intended for the lively execution of the popular music at the concerts and dance pavilions. It was appropriate for the native popular songs, but quite not for the studio sound disco-music.

By the end of 70-ies Janis Lusens has created a band "Zodiaks" in the heart of the Latvian State J.Vitols Conservatory. This group was basically concentrated on studio work. Janis Lusensens also periodically cooperated with the ARCA group of Juris Kulakovs. This group was popular by playing their jazz-rock compositions on the amateur stage.
All of the "Zodiaks" initial band participants was the students of Latvian State Conservatory: Zane Griva (has been playing keyboard instruments in the group) had been studying the piano class, a guitarist Andris Silis - a contrabass class and a timpanist Andris Rainis with a bass player Ajnars Ashmanis had been studying at the department of wind instruments.
The group produced the debut album “Disco Alliance” in the firm “Melody” in 1981. It made an instant, although a short-lived furor all over the Soviet Union territory. The disk became like an answer to a phenomenon of European dancing electronics, in particular, of the French group SPACE.
A lot of records have been drawn and bought up instantly in our huge country. This group became popular among all ages. There was hardly any family, which hadn’t bought the first album of Zodiaks.
Besides such talented compositor as Lusens, Alexander Griva was one of the best sound producers of the country. His name was mentioned on many records. This person was playing an important role in success of "ZODIAC".
The idea to record the album with the functional character of the disco, dancing music was more likely an occasion to test the force in a new genre both for Lusens and for Griva, rather than a result of the art searches. The album was drawn with the help of ARCA group's musicians and was obviously imitating SPACE (with the reminiscences from their music). The album has filled an obvious lacuna between the demand for similar music and the only supply of the western samples.
The slow composition "Mirage" is extremely polyphony saturated in comparison to the fast compositions, where the melody and basses are the main ones. Zodiac cannot be reproached for the monotony, in contrast to many western projects. Zodiac has never been a copier of itself.
The strong feature of the group's creativity is the conformity of the composition’s name to the matter. Listening «Fate on an Ice» from the first album, we remember many victorious performances of the Soviet figure skaters from the pleiad of I.Rodnina and A.Zajtsev. The «Provincial disco” theme was created according to the traditional Soviet platform style that is full of percussions and sequencer polyphony in the top registers. In its turn, it demonstrates all the charm of the manipulation with a melody in various octaves. This element is one of the most difficult for the instrumental disco genre because of the possible monotony. "Zodiaks" is the brilliant sample of the creative genius, imagination and ingenuity.
The compositions of this group are actively used on "station breaks" by the Soviet TV.
« The Disco Alliance » has become not only like the first and unique success of "ZODIAC", but also has caused a great number of the similar works publications, the most interesting of which has become an album «Discifonia» (1981) by the group " SLANGS " from Lithuanian Kaunas.
The second album of "ZODIAC", « Music in Universe » (1983), was a pale copy of the first one and has passed insensibly. The disco subject is a leitmotif in the first album, in comparison to the second one, where J.Lusens is appealing to space. There were new instruments, rhythms, membership (a guitarist Dzintars Sagens, a bass player Ivars Pilka), the placed emphasis on the guitars, a syncopated rhythm and the same magnificent polyphony in the composition «In a light of Saturn” were demonstrated.
All the albums of Zodiac are unique, different and represent the compositions connected by certain style and subjects. The first album is executed in “disco" style and includes both: fast rhythmical and slow lyrical melodies. The influence of the group Space is felt in the two first compositions «Disco Alliance ". That is to say, they have determined the face of the group: an abundance of new space sounds of synthesizers. The Characteristic feature of the album - low registers used by Janis Lusens. The melodies of rhythmical compositions alternately sound in the top and bottom octaves. The rhythmic figure of bass-guitar is desirable. It represents the independent instrument merging with keyboard in the second composition.
Lusens had graduated the conservatory one year later and became a leader of the group «NEPTUNE". In the middle 80-ies he completely turned to the academic music: he was composing music for the performances, writing songs on the verses of Latvian poets, suites, where sometimes the elements of the modern fate were used by him.
Both albums of the group came out as one compact disc in Latvia in 1999. It was named “Disco Alliance” with the label “Microphone Records”. The project PPK creates a cover-version of the title composition of the first Zodiac's album in 2003. It was named as Resurrection. The composition became rather popular in all clubs of the Europe, including such bastion of modern dancing music, as island Ibiza and entered UK singles chart Top 40.

Dance Box

One of the biggest surprises from old soveit dance makers!
I was surprised when I've got to listen it. It couldn't be done somewhere in Riga. It sounds like it comes somewhere from UK top dance floor. Worth it!
