Tongue In Cheeks

by Zonk

Trip-hop. Funk. Rock'n'roll. Zonk blurs the lines between Portishead and the Chili Peppers, with the alternately fierce and funky vocal talents of Ms. Nic McFiendish.

This trip-hop-rock band is rooted in diverse musical experiences and influences, urban sounds, and San Francisco. The ZONK foursome includes female Singer/Songwriter McFiendish, Producer/Musician/Sound Designer Dave L, Guitarist/Bassist/Harmonica player Uncle Bergie, and Scratch DJ/Mixologist DJ Red5. Sometimes likened to "Beck meets Portishead", ZONK is a modern melding of styles united by a distinctive, sultry voice and thoughtful songwriting.

--- REVIEWS ---

"You have more stage presence than most of the big name acts we bring in."
San Francisco's Great American Music Hall staff person

"After one listen of ZONK's sultry trip-hop, you may wonder why you haven't been Zonked before. Surely, in a just world, such a sparkling mix of moody synths, funky drum machines, and sexy vocals would be signed up pronto by a major label. "Urban Paradise" is a perfect example of electronica that ought to be played on pop radio right now: it's hummable, danceable, and fun. And once it lodges itself in your brain, it's hard to get rid of -- a sure sign of pop music greatness."
Coury Turczyn, CNET's music.download.com.

"The band [ZONK] was filled with vibrant energy and played an excited set of diverse music, with lead singer Nic McFiendish bouncing across the stage with the microphone stand straddled between her legs the entire time. The highlight of Zonk's performance was when two emcees, Bolo of Pawray and Mic Kaos, came up to give the band some hip-hop flavor. Like De La Soul in the '80s, Zonk's most enjoyable quality was that it seemed like they were having a good time along with the crowd on stage."
Canyon Cody, Boston College Heights.

"What would happen if Poe did trip-hop? ... here's some smooth funk on sweet synth sounds, accessible and sultry on great female vocals, sinisterly urbanized on great turntabilism scratching and just enough of the edgy pop set to give one an excellent companion to their Goldfrapp yearnings. It's....ZONK"
Bill Mahoney, Techno Punk Music.

ZONK is my new favorite band! Their presence mesmerizes the moment they hit the stage. Inventive electronic sounds, great lyrics, fun vibe and infectious energy You MUST go see this band!"
Roberta Donnay, Grammy-nominated artist and founder of Diva Bands Association

"The band I could see every night and listen to every day."
Bodacious Brenda, the Blue Moon show on KUSF 90.3FM San Francisco

Different and interesting -- in the good ways
I found about ZONK through Dance Dance Revolution--the track "tittle tattle" blew my freaking mind. While this CD is more "rock", it hints at the strange influences and electronic weaving to come. Color me a fan.

Trash-hop lover

zonk gets it
these kids are doing something different and it really came across at a live show. tell your music-appreciating friends: trash-hop, ZONK's sound, is worthy of spending a few bucks on, smoking a fattie with, and appreciating for years to come.

je suis fou...or je suis folle?
I like what you are doing.
I got intrigued by your song "je suis fou"...being a french speaking person, I wasn't sure if you guys made a mistake or it was intentional but "fou" is masculine in french and "folle" feminine. Since I heard a girl voice singing this song I'm quite confused...lol.

This cd is excellent, i've listened to it numerous times since i bought it. To make a comparison if you like Portishead youll probably like this, but they dont sound exactly like Portishead, similar with their own uniqueness.
